I ahve a 2011 103 TDI Golf after my first 5000k's I noticed this "paint can ball rattling" noise which is only heard with the windows up. I took it to the dealer and took them for a drive but of course the sound wasn't there or it was barely there. So they had a look at it and they told me it was the high pressure fuel pump and was normal. It is on and off and sometime when in the higher rev rang around the 3-4K mark it is quite loud. I have had them look at it a few times but they say there is no fix for it. The car has done 55000k's now and still happens every now and then.

I also get the ticking noise like a plastic ticking whilst driving in low rev range and can only hear it with the windows down and whilst driving near something for it to echo off. Was also told this was normal. Not sure what to do about this as I kept getting told it is normal.

In other words, don't worry about it. The other faults are a bit of a concern though.

Thanks Rob. Also have fault code 01315 in address 17: Instruments and address 19: Can Gateway. Would these be related to the same issue, and as I have vcds should I clear the codes or leave it to the dealer? Due for another visit there in near future for fuel economy issues and clutch shudder. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't delete the fault in the Engine control unit as it will delete the other faults. The other control units it doesn't matter unless there are other faults. Seeing as though the dealer didn't check/delete them last time I doubt they'll check/delete them this time either.

Great thread, finally someone else that share the same problem as me.
I've started to hear this ticking sound at 28k, and got pretty worried, even I have over 3 years on the warrenty.

The ticking sound is only apparing when in 1st or 2nd gear, and just after I press the throttle. The DSG has also started to act funny, and I feel something is wrong with the clutch, or something is loose under the right wheel. There has been no damage to the car whatsoever.
I took it to the dealer, and a technician tried it. He could hear the ticking instantly, and we also noticed a metal sound when driving over bumps.
He could confirm something was wrong, and 30 minutes later he showed me a print from VW (he also said this shouldn't be shown to the public..) with a known problem regards to the ticking sound, and apparently it was caused by the DSG. The error code (fault) was 2026473/2. Anyone have any information abount this fault code? Could a firmware upgrade fix this, or is it a mechanical problem?

The dealer confirmed there was no firmware updates to my car whatsoever. I also found this a bit strange, as it's a 2011 (ordered oct 2010) Scirocco on its first service (30k), so I would expect some upgrades (e.g. Navi, DSG, TCS, etc.).

Hope you can ease my pain and tell me it's a warranty problem, so I don't have to drive around embarrased bacause of this sound. I paied 100k AUS dollars for this (in Norway), so it shouldn't sound like that.

    Thanks

Bulletin 2026473/2 is October 2011. So its missing if you have the noises. Reprogramming of the DSG ECU is required to recognise rough roads like cobbled surfaces. Results in quicker gear changes so on rough roads the rattle/clatter is less and no clutch adaption happens . Owners usually confuse this update with the effects of 37G7 campaign, it just gets loaded when 37G7 is done because the latest firmware also has previous updates such as 2026473/2.

There are no warrenty instructions as its regarded as normal. No instructions to update the DSG ECU separately for 2026473/2.

Thanks RW1, if I understand you correct - the smart thing would be to send a request to the shop tomorrow and ask for an DSG ECU upgrade to version 37G7, and hopefully that will fix it. A second workaround is to shut the windows of course..

Yes its one way but as with my October 2009 build, the DSG may not be targetted for 37G7 so it may not be accepted as part of 37G7 worldwide campaign and therefore warranty costed.

I had this rattle on acceleration on my manuals golf gti. Dealer fixed it under warranty. Never asked what the problem was but was advised it was common in the golf mk6's. Ask your dealer, I'm sure they know what's causing it.
As for the shuddering upon acceleration, it could one of your coils are dying. Have it checked and replaced before it gets inevitably worst.
