The air-conditioner on my GTI died about a week after I got the car, some rear trim wasn't fitted properly and there are rattles in the front doors that come and go.

The a/c and rear trim were fixed quickly, but that has not made me think that the car is unreliable, - it has run faultlessly since. Compared to the Holdens I have owned/driven I very happy with the quality of the car, it certainly a few steps above the quality of the Holdens. Used to be on a first name basis with the Holden Service manager, because of the amount of times my cars were in for warranty repairs.

Drove a loan 90TSI with DSG for a day, it had about 5000km on it, no squeaks and rattles, everything worked, the DSG was great in traffic and the car felt stable and secure, being loan car it would not have had the easiest life.

You can always be unlucky and get a lemon........ I have also read the stories on the other forums, but they have not changed by mind, regarding the reliability of the mk6.

I've said it before in some of the other threads, but I'll say it again.

It is a MASS manufactured product, there are literally thousands of separate components on these cars made by external manufacturers and VW itself. When you're producing such large quantities of product, no matter HOW stringent the quality checks are, bad ones will get through.

Drive it and enjoy it, if something goes pop, deal with it then! VW would not have put an engine they didn't believe in on the market, the bad press and loss of customer base would not be worth it.
VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life
There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

There was some article that stated the car is the most complicated mass produced item a person will own. Some have upto 20000 components. Even with a minute compenent failure rate (ie 0.025%) you are still looking at 5 components that may fail!

There's long time VW buyers and then there's a second group of Subaru/Toyota type people looking to take the next nervous step up. They have a fear of Euro cars costing them a bucket load and though they want something a little classier than the norm and they don't have huge amounts of money to spend.

These people usually get frightened at the first sign of a problem and return to Subaru or Toyota where they feel safe again. Eg a squeak

The stats show that Golfs are above average in the reliability stakes. If you want high reliability go older tech. ie most Japanese brands and Skoda which gets most technology after its been sorted in VWs.

Yes there is a squeak in some Golfs. Would it really stop you from buying the World COTY?

Talking World Car of the Year!

For those that don't know, or are unable to Google the acronym, COTY stands for "Car of the Year".

In 2009, the new 6th generation Volkswagen Golf won the World Car of the Year award!.

My two bobs worth: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt an unreliable, faulty, problematic car would even get on the short list, let alone win, so Volkswagen's new Mk6 Golf is more than fantastic, it's just down right god-like!! The whole package is great. Plus, even if the odd problem does get past the extremely tight Quality Assurance process, then there's still no need to panic; the 3 year warranty will be there to protect you, or 6 years if you go extended. Finally, who do you trust more, a few people posting comments on websites (even this forum), or an international judging panel of car experts. Me, well, I say the latter!

I've read reliability rankings and every time it's the same. Lexus/Toyota first then Japanese brands, followed by European then American. I know it's best to take this with a grain of salt but it does get me wondering. Obviously things like the demographics of specific model ownership and their driving styles would influence these rankings

I would like to know (if there is such a thing) what the reliability stats actually are (in numbers, percentages, etc)

Of course, if you would include the bicycle, it would be first!

Car owners recounted their experiences as owners of vehicles with model years from 2000 to 2009, which were then used by the organization's researchers to predict the reliability of 2010 model-year vehicles.

There is a laser welder in the newcastle area but the cost to hire it would be almost as much as a new car

In 1974 the Wheels Magazine Car of the Year was the Leyland P76 not that it has any bearing on this thread but sometimes cars win and they get withdrawn from production soon after.
