Being a new convert to VW with my TSI, I think you're right in what you say. I took 6 months agonizing over VW (GTI and TSI), WRX, MPS, XR5, Reno Megane 225, Ralliart etc. The TSI won in the end for the engine technology even though it is not as quick as any of the other choices. Still a great car to drive. All the Golf models are overpriced compared to the competitors in their class with inferior performance and handling, but have a "refinement factor" which seems to make up for this.
Winning a Wheels COTY shouldnt mean much anyway when you look back through previous winners. (Magna has won it twice!!) I really dont want my car bundled in with some of the lemons they've named previously. For now I'm happy to sit back and enjoy my new found admiration for the TSI (until something goes wrong, that is )
Current drive:2016 Golf GTI 40 Years in Pure White
I think it's hilarious and sad how some people on the Wheels site are saying how this is a repeat of the Camira 1982 award, or it has ruined their Wheels experience and they'll never read again.
HILARIOUS!
What I had to laugh about was the guy bitching that they announced it before the Mag came out, umm dont they do that every year, the definately did last year......
Sad people out there cant take it for what it is, and I'm sure the lack of any Aussie muscle in the top cars is biting hard with some readers.

Old Skool Passat Power Rules!!!
1974 Passat LS with a SEAT 1.8, 32/36 Weber, full performance exhaust and a K&N filter. 80kw at the wheels??
Hahaha knobhead ACA journo talking about the Benz;
"E series" - it's an E Class. Made it sound like a HSV.
"6.3 litre engine" - 6.2 litres actually.
It's a shame that Wheels have to be associated with the clowns at the Packer camp.
Well done VW.
