Well this is good news.
It has ended up that there is a single faulty part, and only 3 things replaced (including faulty ECU). As mentiond above, the ECU isn't even made by VW, but made by Bosch. And before someone comes in here and says that VW should then find someone better, Bosch parts are used by practically every car brand in the world (well, my knowledge of Asian cars is not good, but Japan, Australia, USA and Europe brands all use Bosch), from Holden & Ford, to Toyota and Mazda, to VW/Audi, and yes, even Ferrari!
It also shows you why consumer goods may be replaced immediately, but laptops/computers, and other complex things like cars (and houses) are not immediately replaced and the supplier has the opportunity to repair it.
The unfortunately thing about this issue is that a loan car was not offered for the entire period without you having to kick up a stink. And then you also had to pay for the excess. It was also frustrating how long the ECU took to get here. Hopefully your feedback and go some way to raising this issue to be addressed by VGA and their dealer network.
