Yes, you would expect a certain level of reliability as a given.

I also expect other attributes on top of that. Like performance, fun to drive, better interior. I wouldn't say I am only a VW person; I like certain models of BMW, Mercs, etc...

I am however not a Toyota person. Would not buy one with my own dosh; short use in case of rental ok. Owning & driving it would be sentencing myself to boredom.

Sorry about OT, just filling in while waiting for more news on the OP situation.

A mate of mine who is a mechanic has recently redeployed from Toyota to Mazda, and says the Toyota is better built and has less warranty claims than Mazda as a whole. The Mazda RX8 has more sevice bulletins than all other Mazda vehicles put together.
He says simple things like wiring looms, are far neater routed on a Toyota compared to a Mazda. Both Makes have virtually nill warranty with regard to Paint and trim defects.

Brake discs and pads are more expensive to replace on a Mazda 3 than a Volkswagen Golf.Strange but true.

As Clarkson once said about kias and other crappy cars."If you buy one of these, you are in effect saying 'I have no interest in cars or driving', and hence you must be no good at it, and are therefore probably a bad driver and should therefore not be allowed on the road or have a licence" (or words to that effect)
Haha.... I remember that. The exact quote was....

The thing is this, if you buy a rubbish car, what you are saying is "I have no interest in cars" If you have no interest in cars you have no interest in driving. And if you have no interest in something it means you are no good at it, which means you must have your driving license taking away.

So swapping one from a car out the back would not be easy if even possible.

A trend is obviuosly started with an individual case but I think your interpretation that this is a "worrying trend" is off the mark. Very few manufacturers carry a full inventory of spares for every model.
The worrying trend was not just this one case of the ECU. The comment about the lack of diesel injector replacements in the country for the Passat failures that I mentioned seems to indicate a "worrying trend" to VWA having low (minimal) parts inventory (since our regional source is in Singapore but their inventory is obviously not exhaustive either).

As for "swapping one from a car out the back", that's why I stated "unsold, undelivered" as I would not expect the dealer to pull one out but for VWA to pull one from a vehicle as described and for them to reset the appropriate codings to the OP's car. Or do you think that would have to be done back in Singapore or even Germany when the replacement ECU is ordered because VWA would lack the resources/expertise to do this locally?
That would be even more worrying.

One thing that Toyota does better than almost any other car maker (no matter what you think of the actual end product) is to design the car in a way that is easy to manufacture. This applies from parts through to to subassemblies up to the complete car and means that all have fewer points where things can be botched up during the assembly process which leads to their legendary reliability.

Back in the late '80s, a production study was made and they found that Mercedes were spending more time CORRECTING assembly faults in their W123 compact sedans than Toyota were spending actually assembling a Corolla. Mercedes actually bought 1000 copies of the case study and had their design and production teams read it to try and reduce the complexity of the assembly process for their subsequent vehicles.

I really hope that the pads and discs last longer for VWs than Peugeots. I went through 5 set of pads and 3 sets of discs (+ I instance of machining) during 150,000 km of owning a 306 with really bad steering wheel wobble under light braking when the discs warped. And I wasn't driving that hard most of the time.

IMO. You have been riped off a big time.
Or paid forward for the extra bonuses people get when they service their Mazda cars with Mazda dealers, nothing is for free in this world.

    Hi all,

Coming to the discussion a bit late, I owned one of the First LR Discovery 3's and within 6 months it had a recall so we took it in and while they were working on it discovered something more with the engine so bad that the engine needed to be replaced. The original time quote was 2 weeks which they provided a hire car (XR6 Turbo [at the time LR was owned by Ford international body]) and a month an half later still not back. The dealer was good though providing updates 2x weekly which we negotiated and through in an upgraded steering wheel for free a $500 part not including labour when it was finally returned. They also let us keep the hire car the entire time paying the excess charges for returning it late nearly two months worth.

IMO, not all dealers are dodgy and are out to cucumber their buyers. Sometimes things go wrong and well that's the nature of anything that you buy really.. things work up until the point they stop working

    Cheers,
    Drew.

Exactly, my last Toyota was a 2001 model - I too didn't have a single problem in the 8 years that it was in my family (apart from rattles). But NOW... eeek. There is no way someone could pay me to have one.

Actually - come to think about it, my 2001 Toyota actually had two recalls. One for the headlight switch causing fires, and the other I think was something to do with the engine also causing fires or immediate loss of power or something...

Mazda RX-8 or a Toyota? Call me crazy, but I don't mind what the wiring looms are like, how simple the cabling that I can't see is like, either.

How about the fact that the RX-8 is a RWD sports car, with a ton of fancy features, beautiful design and most of all, fun to drive.

It's got more problems than a corolla? (which we have an '04 in the driveway) I expected that.. Who cares?

I know what I'd rather own, unless it's as bad as the holden issue back in 2002 with the LS1s and then the whole car falls apart in the first year, then yes avoid. Otherwise?
