Varying throttle response DSG - S vs Tiptronic?

By my seat of the pants measurement, I'm starting to think the throttle response is more immediate and engine revs rise faster with the DSG in "S" mode compared to tiptronic mode.

This is for a 118TSI, but may also apply to any DSG equipped GTI or 90TSI.

Anyone else felt the same? Has anyone measured this?

I'd say if anyone has measured this, it'd be Logger

    I'd be inclined to agree.

I dislike S mode for round town, though, since it revs out too much and it's possible for a demented cop to book you as a hoon for excessive revving. I do use it when I need to cross three lines of traffic and can't afford a stutter, though.

In the twisties such as Reefton, Baw Baw, Tassie west coast, Walhalla, etc, sport mode is just sublime. No need to worry about finding the paddles when the wheel is being wound from left to right at rapid pace - S mode just keeps on giving exactly the right punch, allowing full concentration on braking and wheel placement.

I reckon my shifter works quicker than the paddles. And hopefully my sports mode will be sorted out soon. Its getting better, but still on the weekend, going up the mountains, it did its violent downshift twice scaring the bejeezus out of the passengers. Gave up with sports mode and changed it to manual. Used to do it all the time, now much less frequent, but its booked back into the dealer in 2 weeks.

    He has now......
Ran a little test today and cktsi I think it must just be a perception. Rate of rev rise is identical in Tiptronic and in Sports mode. Both modes peaking at ~2700 per sec rise which is pretty spritely. Will post details tomorrow so you guys can shoot holes in it.

Aaah - that's what I love about these forums! Ask a question, and there's always someone who can come up with an answer! In this case, an answer with graphs and spreadsheets to backup the response!

    Thanks logger

Amen to that! Although I think Logger makes the Mark6 forum unique in that he truly does 'log' unlike in any other forum

Tiptronic vs Sports throttle response.xls Shows four quick runs I did. Two apiece in Tiptronic and Sports mode. Pegging throttle from around 1000rpm to the floor (100%) in 1st gear and not pressing kick down. Only logged two parameters, pedal position and rpm so as to get a decent sample rate of ~ 5 per sec. Every extra parameter I log reduces sample rate. I dropped in a simple formula calculate the increase in rpm over previous 6 samples to give a rolling average. Anyway all four peaked at around 2700 rpm increase per second. Nothing to show one mode was more responsive than the other in my opinion.

Very nice piece of work mate! I had a feeling you might be able to get a measurement of throttle position. It's interesting that there are at least 1000 intervals (as I saw some decimals)

Just a question... the throttle was in position 100 but rpm's dropped in your yellow highlight... so I assume that's the rev limiter cutting in?

I didn't look close enough to notice that, but that almost definitely would be the case. In both modes held foot to the floor so the revs would have dropped when DSG7 commanded gear changes due to schedule in S and rev limit in T.
It also highlights verifies the fact you are commanding 100% accelerator with pedal at the detent prior to pressing kick down in case anyone had their doubts about this.

There are probably ways to measure this more accurately but this seems to show rate of rev rise vs time adequately. Might have been better to peg a nominal accelerator position, allows revs to stabilise then peg the pedal if I did it again.

Also neglected to mention, I did the test in Stock tune as I though the APR stage 1 would skew things.
