I have (a 135i even), and I prefer the Golf.

To throw a bit of perspective, we have an 08' X5 3.0sd Sports Excecutive in our garage, and honestly I find the interior of the Golf and it to be quite close to par (although the Bimmer's seats are exquisite, and the Panoramic sunroof is beautiful). It is no detriment to the Beemer as much as it is an accolade to the VW Golf build quality.

Well for the cheap end of the euro, the cheap 'soft touch' plastic looks fairly classy. Sit in a Fiat Punto if you want see cheap euro hard plastic (although done with style, but still cheap). or an XR5 Focus for that matter.

Very good points. I've a Focus and an (old) Polo downstairs. The Polo is the cheaper of the two, but you'd never deduce that by looking/using/touching/driving them both.

Go sit in BMW Merc or Audi 3,A4,C class and above and see why the cars can cost over $100k for yourself.

Sometimes the same people who will bag ford, Holden, can't be seen to accept or appreciate the other side of the hierarchy... It's there.
I've spent plenty of time in an E90 320i, and I can tell you, it ain't all lollipops and rainbows. The quality is good, but it's not leagues ahead of the Golf by any means. The 3 is a fairly premium car, especially in Australia considering the prices we're paying, but I'm wondering if the higher-end 3s are fitted with higher-grade interior trim that befits their greater prices. A 320i starts at $55k, whereas an M3 4dr manual starts at $145k. That's quite a variance for what is fundamentally the same core vehicle.

REXman, don't sell the Golfs short - seriously, they're amazingly good for the price. Just wait till you've received yours and have had time to appreciate the details.

geeze, there's no need to make things personal.... you come across as though you're disgruntled because you've just been turkey slapped

im not questioning that $100k+ bmws have nicer interiors than $55k vw's... but then, if vw were to produce a car that didnt skimp, but rather, filled out a $100k+ price tag, i dare say that the VW would be nicer than the bmw...

here- there's an easy way to sort this out: go into a bmw dealership, and ask to have a look at a bmw X1. ask them for the "better performing" of the two diesels, then ask for leather and pearl metallic paint, and say, sunroof. or sat nav, or whatever you might have optioned up in your golf.

then, ask them how much it would cost to have one delivered and on the road, and try not to **** yourself to tears as they seriously and sensibly tell you that it'd be touching $90k.

i was able to actually make it OUT of the dealership before i turned to my old man and asked "they're ****ing kidding, right?"

i've sat inside a mk5 r32 and it was a nicer place to be. sorry. it's just the truth....

On that note, is there anyone else other than me who thinks that the mk5 interior felt a bit nicer than the mk6? (although not as well put together)

my perception was the mk6 interiors look more modern but the mk5 interiors actually looked like they were made out of better quality stuff.

Talking of interior, my mate owns mazda 3 mps which is i may add 'gay' blue colour or aqua lol whoever owns a car with that colour and is not a chik should get a reality check (definetely not for blokes). Anyways we went for a spin and i could notice how the interior had lines going through the dash and what not which were in sync with the music. Now the funny part is that when the music is pumping so are the lights lol i seriously felt like i was at a disco or something along the lines, i just cracked up laughing.
