I had 2 water pump changes, the second was for a pump with the new clutch material. the squeak came back after 4000km but it was temporary as I have not noticed any squeaking nowadays (20,000km since)

mr gee, what build is your car? Most of the complaints I have read about seem to be pre 2011. Is anyone with a MY11+ build date having the supercharger squeal issues?

I understand that it is a normal performance noise. But it takes away from the quite luxury feel of the golf. My heart was really set on a 118tsi, but now I'm considering the 90tsi.

So VW keep changing the design slightly to see whether it stops or not - apparently they haven't yet got there...
Being that we keep hearing rumours that they're just going to get rid of the supercharger on the next model, maybe they'll never get there. Seems "regular customers" are not happen with "performance noises".

Rolls Royce had a problem with the clock ticking. (Perhaps because most manager/directors were late for a meeting?)
What is important, is that this noise does not inicate a performance fault, or a future wear fault.

AND, in any case, if the clutch fails to grip, I expect would simply drop performance to 90 TSI level!

Although it may not indicate a performance fault, I wouldn't want to pay for a 118KW car and get a 90KW car...

To my knowledge I don't think anyone has complained about the supercharger failing, simply that the noise concerns them

Mine hardly every makes the noise. When you have the windows up, AC on and the Dynaudio stero on you will not hear it.

Thanks Brendan_A that's comforting information. I wouldn't mind a little squeal as long as I can drown it out with the stereo

I've just been to my local Volkswagen dealer and I was told the cars arriving in September will all come with standard bluetooth and MDI. So I think I'll be holding out for one of those.

Mine is MY11.5 Polo GTI and it has it, it developed at approx 1800kms.

Corey, you're missing the point here mate, I am a performance enthusist but a slipping clutch isn't a performance noise, it's poor engineering. Yeah, it doesn't bother me as much as some people but if indeed it's a "performance noise", why isn't it there from the factory? Why don't they tell people at the dealerships and with all enquiries about it at head office levels? It's a problem, that's why, why else do we all get told the bulls**t line of it being a "characteristic" of the car? Why too, is it only afflicting (in Polo GTI terms) australian delivered vehicles? Different parts supplier not manufacturing correctly perhaps?

You buy a Tesla roadster, you know that you are going to hear every creak and rattle of the car because there is nothing other than wind noise to drown it out. You buy a Golf 118TSI or Polo GTI after believing all the bullsh*t that comes from VGA that it's a sub-premium brand, you don't expect an annoying little squeek to develop after driving several thousand kilometers hell, even holden and ford do a better job and they at least don't try to shove media awards in the faces of customers instead of answering questions.

Now, from the other perspective, Corey, you are right. People have to remember that these cars are equipped with a DSg gearbox and a good tell tale in that you are asking too much from the engine at too low an rpm is if you here this noise. Boot it from 1200rpm in a gear and it will happen because the supercharger isn't engaged at this engine speed because it's not needed but then you want a big power surge, the clutch doesn't engage quickly enough (possibly a reason) and it squeaks as it slips. Do the same at 2200rpm, the noise is less pronounced, if present at all. I have learned to drive around it, I have also learned that having the radio at a normal, audible level also drowns it out.

Best solution? Drive the car above the affected rev range, you will enjoy the drive more (not the fuel savings) and you won't get teh noise. Hell, seeing as it's disappearing after some time, perhaps it's better to drive it harder to wear down the clutch material to stop the squeek

That's the same attitude VW are taking with the waste gate actuator rattle in the MkVI Golf GTi. I agree with gavs - they aren't doing their branding any favours by saying these sort of faults are 'normal'

Yep, the next model, when they abandon twin charge, almost certainly won't have it
