Yep- I know the difference between the two sounds. Used to own a '97 club spec evo wrx.. The whoosh whistle is a marked difference to the mechanical whine of a sc. In the rear lane behind my house (access to carport) the alley is VERY narrow and the sound is echoed loudly straight back to cabin with windows down.

I understand the sc will engage for longer at a tall gear / low speed- the reason I suggested the low speed accel in 1st off the mark is the lack of other sound interference: wind buffet etc.

Also just as the sc has finished doing it's bit raising the revs I can hear it whine a split second extra after lifting off the gas. Then engine returns to normal sound resonance at idle. All this is happening in my rear lane as I approach garage.

Are you listening for the whine at low speed with windows DOWN?

Yes crawling at 700rpm with windows down. Plant the foot. Even applying a handful of handbrake to load things up. Mine is FAINT and extremely difficult to hear. You can just discern a rumble for about a second. On my installation you would not describe it as a whine at all. Must be better sound damped than your GT for whatever reason.

Mine is an MY07 GT and it is equally faint and difficult to hear at low speed (window down). Perhaps Marius is driving in a more enclosed area (narrow street) like he said that is why he is able to hear it easily.

perhaps my perception of a distinct whine (helped along by narrow alley) is in fact the same "faint whine" you guys are hearing...

    who knows!?

triode12 - you're in Sydney. maybe we will compare each others noisy and not so noisy engines one day!!!

i believe it was along the lines that logger mentioned --> and concluded the engineering side was not effected. ie: no loss of power functionality or longevity of parts. The ONLY reason they are trying to find a fix is because people don't like the sound.

imagine how unpopular TDI engines would be if sound alone was such a contributing factor (i actually love the truck noise combined with turbo whistle).

while i do understand some may NOT like the sound --> my GT Sport is one of those cars where on a quiet stretch i wind the windows down and turn the radio off just so i CAN hear all the squealing, whistling and exhaust farting (DSG up shifting)!!!!
Well. In relation to the Water pump issue (chirp/squeek sound upon acceleration), i just had my 15000KM service at a different dealership to where the problem was first attempted to be fixed.
==> The delarership attached a little sheet to my invoice which reads along the lines of "VW recognises there is a problem etc, VW is currently working on a solution to address the issue. If you are not informed within 4 weeks, please notify us".

I understand that we already knew VW was working on a solution, however this post is just for those people on this forum that are trying to downgrade the the issue, in that it is not an issue and it is only a noise that should be put up with. VW recognises it is a problem, and they were quite suprised how loud the chrip sound was, they said it was as if a bird was sitting inside the car chirping away.

    Smile

We developed the squeal after the car (2009 TSI11 had its clutchs replaced.
Now we have had the engine replaced - it still makes the noise. When it goes in for its next service I will ask Kloster VW what they can do about it.

    I have the squeal too

My car is 10 months old, 10,500kms, and yesterday I noticed the squeal for the first time.
Its quite faint, but 100% noticeable.

Happens when accelerating, and I could notice it 2 or 3 times a minute in typical city driving.

I'll have my 12 months service soon, so I'll see what they say.

I had my turbo clutch(s) replaced by VW at about 4k and fixed the problem. Now just done nearly 7k and the squeal came back yesterday Obviously the new part has not fixed the problem - long term.

My 118TSi (manual) is in for service today and has this same problem. I'm sure I'll be told it's completely normal and then have to deal with VW when the engine falls out.
