    TSI 118 consuming engine oil

I had the Check Engine Oil light up on my TSI 118 MK 6 this Friday eveing as I was driving back from work. On checking I found the oil had dropped to the bottom of the marker (i.e low) on the dip stick. There is no trace of any oil leak. My vehicle is only 3 months old and has so far put in about 5800 km. I was not able to bring it to VW Service because of the long weekend. Does any have problems with TSI 118 engines consuming oil?

The car came with Castrol SLX professional long life 504 oil. I tried to purchase this to top it up over the weekend but you cannot buy this from a retail shop. You can only get this from the VW dealer.

So car is stuck in garage and I am waiting to call dealer first thing Tuesday morning to get some advice.

I hope this is not going to be a major problem 'cos it has been a lovely car to drive. I have never had to top up engine oil in my previous cars.

It is normal that engine used some oil during running in.
You can buy PENRITE Enviro 5W30 from Repco in 5L and also 1L bottles.

Thanks for the info. I will have it topped up and monitor it from here. Hopefully it won't comsume so quickly after this. I did not notice the Indicator light earlier. Don't know if I had missed it or it did not show until the oil level was at the 'low' level. Will ask VW Service when this indicator is supposed to show earlier.

That's not an indicator for checking the oil level. You should use dipstic instead and check the oil on more regular bases I think the owner's manual says every 500km or when you re-fuel.

^^^^^ What he said about regular level checks.

Shell Helix Ultra Extra is also 504.00 approved & readily available. You can also top up with any 502.00 approved oil (like Castrol Edge 5w30).

I'd also recommend that as part of the running in process, you get some pressure behind the rings. Don't be afraid to use half/ three-quarter throttle regularly and let the engine rev a bit - especially going up hills. A couple of runs up Maquarie Pass or similar do wonders. This doesn't mean thrashing it or anything - just don't baby it or aim for fantastic fuel economy yet.

Dropped in to Dealer today in my other car and picked up a litre of the oil (Castrol Longlife III ) they use for about $29.00. They confirm it is normal during the run in stage for engine oil to be consumed. Thanks for all your advice and feedback.
