Timing chain and tensioner discussion and issues

Picked the car up on Saturday morning after leaving it with Audi since Thursday afternoon - chain rattle fixed and im $950 poorer. Couldn't be bothered playing games with VW (my local dealer in particular is difficult), so Audi replaced the tensioner, metal timing case cover plate + bolts, crank bolt, and one of the plastic chain guides for me.

Now i can rest easy knowing that my engine has the updated parts fitted to it. List of parts fitted shown below:

Same with the bicycle chain. The pins between the rollers thin out.

Which Audi dealer did you get it done with if you don't mind?
I'm in Sydney, and need the same thing done, however when I called Audi, they said they didn't touch Volkswagens?

I take my VW to Autohaus Strecker on Wyndham St in Alexandria... great service, authorised and cheaper than VW dealership

Mine was build late 2010 Mk6 Golf GTI.

Contacted VW and they advise case by case basis and no recall on these earlier batch of timing chain tensioner.

Did you guys have any done under warranty or recall? Otherwise how much will i be looking at? Someone told me my engine will need to be lifted out to do tensioner and chain replacement as they must be done at the same time.

Engine does not have to be lifted and I paid $2000 from VW. I did my GTI as a precaution. The wife's polo was done under warranty. She was out of warranty by time but in by distance, only 80000klms and 4 years old.

As Reedy said - the engine does not need to be lifted/removed to replace these parts. Ive had the tensioner and some of the plastic guides changed on mine as a precaution too (wish id done the chain too but didnt)

This is very useful guys, I have a 2012 VRS (2.0T) and as mentioned, 2012 was the year the offending parts got upgraded.

Any specific month build, or just anything from 2012 onwards is OK ?

Car is coming out of warranty soon and I don't hear any tappety tap tap from the chain (fingers crossed)!

(Gonna do some Googling to see what I can add to this thread).

i posted this information in another thread about changing the tensioner but it might be useful to have it here.

These are the various timing chain tensioner part numbers and revision dates for the CDAA, CCZA and CDAB engines.

06H 109 467N >> 26.04.2010
06H 109 467T 27.04.2010 >> 29.08.2011
06H 109 467AB 30.08.2011 >> 04.03.2012
06K 109 467K 05.03.2012 >>

All of the tensioners other than the 467K version have been dropped and must not be used as spare (replacement) parts. That revision cost £38.40 inclusive of VAT when I last checked with TPS on 27.2.14.

The camshaft timing chain was also revised earlier this year. The original part number is 06H 109 158M and the revised part number is 06H 109 158AA. The price of the latter was £59.05 when checked on 27.2.14.

Affected engines:

CDAA = 118KW 160HP 1.8TSI
CDAB = 112KW 150HP 1.8TSI
CCZA = 147KW 200HP 2.0TSI

Now would this refer to the car build date or motor build date .. and where would I find the motor build date !?

Fk there are a lot of blown 2.0T motors in the UK .......
