Wow, that is nasty. Makes you wonder how on earth they did it??

My GTI arrives soonish: am I correct in assuming that the smallest touch of my lovely 18" Detroits against a curb will result in disaster (in which case my lovely wife will be hencefore banned from parallel parking it!)?

ummm.. stop taking your car to autowashers.. they are bad for the paintwork but as you seem to have found out bad for rims as well.

Really sorry to see mate, hope it gets sorted

Based on personal experience (cry) and threads on here and other forums, a mobile repairer will not be able to match the original finish - end of story. The only solid outcome to return the car to its original condition will be to replace the alloy and swap tyre over.

The unfortunate reality is this; You will need to allow the process to take place where the mobile repairer attempts to repair it, fails (it will look different to the other wheels), then re-issue a LOD to re-affirm you wish to be placed into the position prior to the damage occurring and that the only outcome now given previous attempts failing to achieve this is alloy replacement + tyre swap.

I just sent the LOD to the owner of the wash. He is okay about it but Candy isn't the same... you know?
Chatswood Classic Cars Service use a mobile guy that matches it perfectly. I had an almost identical scratch on my Detroit, and after it was fixed I couldn't find the wheel / spot where it had been scratched. Around $150 if I remember correctly.

I did the ring arounds yesterday. Magman at Punchbowl didn't want to touch it. I just happened to be working from our Canberra office yesterday and one of the other rev heads there had machine finished wheels that he kerbed. He put me onto a guy in Queenbeyan who put me onto a guy in Fyshwick who put me onto two people in Sydney.

Virgin Wheels in Kings Park will re-machine the entire wheel for $240
The Wheel Centre in Botany will also re-machine the entire wheel using a CNC lathe with an absolute gaurantee it will be as good as new for $297 incl GST> They do the demo's for Barloworld that get ruined in test drives.

I have asked for quotes from both to give to our car wash operator who is now a bit dubious that the damage happened in his care.

Think I will ring the Chatswood CC contact also. In the end I will likely cover either some or all of the cost myself depending on the car wash as I would rather have the wheel back to perfect than save a few $$$$ and have to run around or end up with a dodgy job.

Your profile says you're in Sydney so I didn't chime in before. Mrs Worm kerbed an alloy on her 380 recently. I called around and got put onto a guy from Queanbeyan to refinish the alloy, it was a fill and spray job and done very nicely, it cost $150. He does the rounds of the car dealers in Canberra/Queanbeyan, so he teed up a day when he was at the Audi dealership in Phillip which I live across the road from, to drop off and pick up while he was there. If you want his contact details let me know. 'Wicked Wheels' is the business name.

I spoke to him- he was very helpful and put me onto the person who put me onto the guy in Botany. I am Sydney based so will go with the Botany guy... although I was at Camden GTI today and he had three 18" Detroits in reasonable condition, just need a buff and polish I think. Anyone know if they can be?
