    Supercharger Fault

Since I bought my 118tsi, very very few times I have either taken off from a rolling start or re-accelerated somewhere between 1000 and 2000rpm I get this Obvious Clicking sound accompanied by what feels like the car hesitating big time. Normally only 3 to 5 clicks sounding similar to a Magna with stuffed CV joints going around a corner.

My Dad who is a mechanic told me it was probably a faulty coil pack and was misfiring (pinging sound) until it finally did it with him in the car and he said it was definitely the supercharger clutch malfunctioning.

You Cannot here it with the radio on and is only really more obvious with the windows down. Funny thing is though, I've had this car for 6000 k's now and still don't have that annoying sound that others have when the supercharger engages.

Has anyone else come across the clicking sound?

It could be a relay switch or a solenoid clicking? These cars do have a lot of electronic components.

you have probably got the 'chirp' from the solenoid of the supercharger coupling. its mounted on the water pump and seems to afflict late model mk 5, mk6 and 1.4 scirroccos.

I read VW is evaluating a redesigned solenoid coupling but an immediate retrofit is not yet available.

lodge the complain with your dealer for when they can replace yours.

as far as a fix for the " chirp" from the supercharger there is no fix that VW has provided for dealers to perform..

As I already tried to say, its not that, Only happens to my car the first few times when its cold, done it since new, I quite like it.

It's also not solenoids, as the car jerks back and fro when it does it. Its the loud, not like the soft clicking of the supercharger as it engages and disengages.

Here some choices for or you:
    1) As long as you like it, nothing to worry about, or
    2) If your Dad says its definitely the supercharger clutch malfunctioning get it fixed, or
    3) Get it checked by someone with proper diagnostics. They will soon tell you if the magnetic clutch is working properly. Also might be able to see what is commanding the undesired torque reduction.

Sorry I can see where that may have been confusing. it was very early in the morning

I meant the supercharger chirp only happens a few times when they car is cold. The clicking is unpredictable and can happen anytime, lucky to be once a week and I don't like it at all lol.

I know exactly what my options are and have already booked it in, as I outlined in my original post, I am asking to see if anyone else is getting the clicking sound, which has totally nothing to do with the chirp!

I had something similar but there was no power loss. I just heard about 2 seconds of clicking, then the clicking goes away (but accompanied by lots of unburnt fuel).

Maybe check your rear view mirror next time you hear the problem.

I don't get this issue as much these days... maybe something to do with the engine running in? How else can the frequency diminish over time?

I thought it might be related to the supercharger clutch too - but I don't even get the supercharger chirp any more. So again, might be the parts just wearing in.

Incidentally my car has been trouble free and I went on a 7 day 2,700 km round trip from Sydney to Melbourne, Great Ocean Road, Coonawarra, then central victoria back to Sydney over the xmas break. Great drive. No worries.

The car was put through various extremes & came through

So whatever the issue is, might not be 'fatal'
