I noticed the APR in America are using GTI's with Sunroofs for their race cars. There is a gallery of the MK6 Motorsport Buildup Gallery here. They're not complete yet in that gallery, but take it for what it's worth - maybe the sunroof isn't as much as a 'weight' or 'strength' issue as people think ?!

Just as I suspected, those Yanks really know how to enjoy their racing. Roof open, catching a tan and the smell of Castrol R in the air.

Perhaps the race cars will have a roll-cage to compensate?

All my previous cars (6 in total) have sunroof. I find it is a luxury but unnecessary. It accumulates dirt and very difficult to clean. I gave it a miss on this occasion with my GTI order. I have the intention to hand this GTI to my son, 10yrs old. I just don't want another added headache on this serviceable item at later date.

    More than likely
But still... if they're fitting them to racecars....

Had factory sunroof in my 91 CRX, loved it, didn't have one in my Intergra Type-R, missed it so much hence it was a no brainer to add sun-roof to my GTi.
No leak problems with my 91 CRX factory sunroof, pretty surprised for a 10yr old plus car (at that time of ownership).
My wife and I love having the top open while cruzing be it during the day or night. In saying this, we are not into convertibles. I guess there is a difference.

Ive had a few over the years in different makes (Toyota, Holden, Audi, VW) and to be honest the only one that has given me any problem is the one in my R32. Nothing major at all like a leak but just a really irritating rattle from the tilting mechanism when tilted. All fixed now.

old R33 Skyline had a sunroof, I used to live in shared apartment complex driveway, never garaged, and it never leaked. The car was 14 years old when I sold it in 2007. had that old bomb for 5 years (bought it as a 9yr old imports)

When I got the V35 it didn't have sunroof and I kind of miss it while driving around in it for 3 years... so I decided to find a GTI with sunroof rather than a leather one without sunroof that I test drove...

The thing is I felt GTI interior was too dark (all those black dash, black roof & pilar lining material) and adding sunroof makes the interior felt brighter and cheerful... and yes I do use the sunroof quite often, mainly in tilt mode for better air circulation...

+1 for sunroof...love it. I pretty much keep it open all the time unless it's raining. Even when cold, I just crank the heat up high.

Unfortunately, I'm bald, and the top of my head is starting to feel it with this warmer weather

That's nothing a piece of "clear tint" like Solar Gard's LX-70 won't fix
