    Steering wheel installation costs

    Hey guys,

    Merry Christmas to all!

Managed to snag a golf R steering wheel for Christmas. Just wondering if anyone knows how much it would be to get it professionally fitted.

    Cheers

    Don't know but it's a 10 minute job.

Hardest part is releasing the airbag.

Nice! I'd be checking your current airbag fits the new wheel before going too far. You'll also need a 12mm triple-square bit to take the old wheel off.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies!

Airbag is a definite fit so I'm good to go, looking at taking it to a VW stealership or a specialist for the install so that I know it's done right.

Hope all are having a great holiday season

    Job is as follows:

Unclip the airbag, disconnect it from steering wheel and put aside
Use [torque]-wrench to remove wheel, unplug any other cables
Reverse order to fit new wheel and airbag
Use VCDS to enable the DSG paddle shifters if applicable

You can ask dealers to quote but I'm sure they'll charge a lot more than is reasonable, if they offer to do it at all. You just need any old handyman and someone with VCDS.

    Thanks mate!

I've watched a few tutorials but still not keen on playing with my airbag. I spoke with another forum member (slowmotion_93) and will be taking it my car to Golf City International in Clayton (Vic) for the install which I'm told will cost around $60 and for the paddles and buttons to work it'll be around $240 for a GTI module, still unsure whether I want to take that path. But for now the updated looks will make me more than jolly this Christmas season.

If you've got the same buttons on the steering wheel (can't remember for the 77TSI, but the 118TSI did) then there's no need for the 'GTI module'.

Have a look at www.carsystems.eu for various modules other OEM euipment. Shipping to Melbourne usually takes 4 business days for me.

Unfortunately the 77 doesnt have buttons at all, so i'll need a 118tsi/gti control module, not to worry, if it's going to keep my eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel then the cost is justified.

    Cheers for the link!

For $60 it's probably worth it to get done in the workshop. Plus it will cost you if you don't already have all the tools... so difference is a probably only $45-$50.

If you don't have a multi-function wheel in your car as standard then you will very likely need the steering wheel control module to get all the buttons working. Not sure if you have DSG or manual but it doesn't look like your new wheel has paddles anyway.
