Steering wheel controls not working with Chinese aftermarket head unit

Hi All,

In classic tightarse fashion I cheaped out and bought this head unit on Aliexpress for AUD$200 delivered.
This was to replace the existing RCD310 in a 2009 Golf MK6.

The listing on Aliexpress stated that this should work with the steering wheel controls (volume, etc..), but it's not working for me. I've tested continuity on the wiring harness and there don't appear to be any wiring issues. I suspect that maybe the canbus gateway (or whatever it's called) (pictured) that they have sent me does not work with my vehicle.




I've also gone through the settings on the unit and the 'learn steering wheel' buttons function does not detect when I press any button on the steering wheel.

I've read though a dozen threads on aftermarket head units but I can't see any previous threads where people have solved issues with the steering wheel controls not working.

Has anyone had this issue or could you recommend a solution or troubleshooting?
When I put the old 310 back in the steering wheel controls work fine.

If you have an aftermarket head unit from china/aliexpress which is working for you can you send me a link or give a model# ??

Could be worth a shot. The canbus gateway adapter that I have is a model VW-RZ-08. I have also seen a model VW-RZ-07 listed for sale. I'm still wondering what other people have.
