A squeaking gear level (manual car) - anyone else have it?

    Chaps

Have noticed over the past few weeks, especially with the hot weather, my gear lever now squeaks when I move it from 2nd to 3rd and from 4th to 5th - only when pushing the level forward. 5th to 6th, for example, does not do it.

Quite amusing yet irritating at the same time - when music is on you cannot hear it, but when it's quiet, there's this little squeak each time you change.

Very weird. Under warranty so will drop it in and see what happens but wondered if it's just a lack of grease that has dried out more given the weather and thus now becoming annoying, and thus if anyone else has ever seen this. A search did not bring up anything...

    Thanks

    Andy

No noises with my manual. As you suggested, it might just need a bit of grease on the moving parts of the gear linkages etc.

Car has done nearly 18000kms and never had a problem with this. Haven't seen it metioned in this forum before either. You are just unlucky I guess. Should be an easy fix at least

I've not heard of this problem. I hope they don't 'fix' it the way Holden dealers have been instructed to rectify gear lever rattles on their MY10 & MY11 Commodores. I have access to the Technical bulletins that are sent to the Holden dealers and cringed when I read the latest one. They reckon the rattle in the gear lever is caused by an incorrect machining of the slot in the bottom of the gear lever.

    The fix? New improved lever?

No! Cut a piece of electrical tape & stick it in the slot and refit the gear lever & boot.

    I kid you not.

I continued reading to find door arm rest squeaks on new Cruze's being fixed with er... tape.

And also wind noises from door mirrors when travelling above 80kph on Commodore's involved removing the offending mirror and.......

.....cutting 3 pieces of tape and sticking to the underside of the mirror.

    BODGY!!

Yeah same here, but I think mine is just the gear shifter boot being a bit dry and rubbing on itself where the folds are...

Thanks all. Will let you know what dealer says as it's bloody annoying and not something I can live with for much longer.

The only squeak I have in that area is from the seatbelt where it can against some clothing materials.

I had the squeak on 1st & 2nd gears couple years ago, very very annoying @__@ When I move the lever it was so 'dry' and squeaky that my hand & arm felt sore -___-; It was happend around 60k (now 110k) and vw burwin fixed it for me(charged me 1hr labour!). If I remeber correctly they applied lub/grease on the linkages, it was all fine since then but...It's start coming back again! I know after a month or 2 it will getting worse.

Now my tdi is out of warranty and I don't want to see the dealer again! I want to DIY but not sure how to get to the linkage....Anyone can shed some light on this?
