Cheapest might be to do a swap with someone who has a stock exhaust and wants some noise?
Just recently bought 2011 gti,
previous owner has a full exhaust with hi flow cat and sports exhaust on it but its too loud and the drone on the highway is driving me mad.
whats the cheapest option to quiet it down a little bit?

Could you change the muffler to reduce the drone?

Is it resonated? Take to a shop and you might be able to get them to put in a resonator or a better resonator etc. Shouldn't cost too much.
Take a photo showing the exhaust from under the car so we can see what mufflers are being used and the size of them etc. It might just have the centre resonator and nothing at the back, or it might have a muffler at the back and no centre resonator.
When i had my Mk6 GTI i had the CTS exhaust and it was really nice. Not only did it look great, but it had a large rear muffler and decent sized centre resonator so it was pretty quiet, no drone but had a nice sound from the outside of the car and when you put your foot down.
