Maximum torque limit on 6 speed manual gearbox

Hi Guys,
I'm looking to update my wifes car and am looking at a golf 118tsi with the manual gearbox (not DSG).... I had a Jetta with the 118tsi mated to the 7DSG in the past but post putting an APR tune in it I got sick of the clutches slipping.
So question is, what is the max torque limit for the clutch on a 6 speed manual gearbox mounted to the 118tsi engines????

All elements that are properly designed have duty factors and safety factors, and you do not want to be encroaching on them. These are to account for peak loadings or ones that can be very transient, and for material variability.

The only safe way to establish the capacity of the gearbox is to see what engine has the hghest torque rating that uses the gearbox and not go over that. If you decide to go beyond that, then it does not mean it will fall in a heap, just that it might not take much for something to go wrong.

On the torque capacity of a clutch, you would need to get some information from the manufacturer to see what they set as the maximum torque. This highest engine torque that the clutch is used on is not necessarily an indicator of the torque capacity of a clutch.

In the end, you have to use the lower of the two values.

In the main, a slipping clutch is an indiator of a worn clutch. Even with a higher output engine, you should not have a slipping clutch unless the clutch has had a hard life where it has been slipped under load and so worn.

Thanks mate, understand, I'm an Engineer as well, don't really want to get into next level of detail but....... anyway..... I knew the 7DSG is only rated to 250NM and I was firing 315NM through it so not surprised it slipped..... anyway my old Jetta had only done 15,000km when I put the tune in, prior to that it was standard so it wasn't worn....

Back to my query, someone must have tuned a manual 118tsi and tested it out?

I have a tuned 118 Golf with 138kw@wheels. I have no issues, but I don't go around doing race starts everyday.

Thanks for that Brendan, it's for my missus so no race starts for sure..... It's just nice to have that extra grunt when you need it on trips and times of need.
