I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
Snowsox aren;t approved for use in Vic only NSW.
Best best is thule k summit chains or RUD centrax.
Check the buller website, as carrying chains is not compolsury to Buller for day trips, only when they advise they're required. If your heading up overnight then they are compulsory.
http://www.mtbuller.com.au/Winter/Sn.../Wheel-Chains:
Mt Buller's wheel chain requirements are decided on a daily basis and are determined by weather forecasts and existing road conditions. Chain requirements may vary between 2-wheel drive (2WD) and 4-wheel drive (4WD) and All-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, as each of these types of cars react differently to snow and icy road conditions.
Daily wheel chain requirements are communicated via the local accommodation providers, retails outlets and authorities who are come into contact with people travelling to the Resort. They also appear on large flashing roadside billboards as you enter and leave Mansfield and on the daily snow report. Contact Resort Management directly on (03) 5777 6077 for the most current requirements.
ALL OVERNIGHT VISITORS MUST CARRY WHEEL CHAINS AT ALL TIMES
If you are staying in the Resort overnight you are required to carry chains at all times as weather conditions may change unexpectedly throughout the evening.
A bit of a late reply but the only chains you should use are the Thule K-Summits (or similar) if you’re running 225/40/18 Detroit’s.
They’re an expensive investment but they won’t damage/scruff your rims.
I unfortunately learnt the hard way.

By law you have to carry chains in an Alpine region. (2 and 4 wheel drive)
Has anyone found chains that suit the R?
I'm not sure about Victoria but I know for a fact that you don't need chains with a 4wd in NSW
I have taken my R down a few times to perisher and the chick at the perisher office in jindabyne asked if i have a 4wd and i said... errr AWD? she looked at me strange and i said never mind yes 4wd.. lol :\
Funny thing is i have seen a few police VE commondoors without chains on driving around.. :S
Hotham have to carry chains. All cars.
I thought ALL cars had to carry chains, including 4WD's. I also don't think chains will fit under the guards of an R or any other car with similar wheel sizes. Check with VW. I know BMW hire out wheels with tyres in Winter to people wanting to go to the snow so they can fit chains.

There is this old thread: Snow Chains on 17" and larger Alloys (18" 19" etc)
Seems there is an option
