Are the socks legal in Victoria?

They're not a legal substitute for diamond pattern snow chains. You can be required by law to CARRY diamond snow chains on NSW and VIC public roads. The law on public roads outside resorts (to my knowledge) seems to extend to only requiring you to carry the chains. Special resort area agreements like Hotham can force you to use them inside the resort.

The 7mm Thule CK-7 are the same as the Konig K-Slim and might be ok if you don't turn too sharply or hit bumps. They'd be legal in Hotham and are about $200-300. That won't help you get out of a parking spot or driveway though which is the biggest PITA.

I find it a bit odd that the standard new car can't go to Mt Hotham without either changing the wheels for smaller ones or fitting the chains to the REAR wheels........NO THANKS!

The Quattro is in the same boat, I assume, but interestingly, Audi is a Mt Hotham sponsor and I'm yet to see the daily update requiring fitment to 4WD/AWD vehicles.......just FWD (A4?)

Best bet is really just to borrow or rent an awd/4wd with tonnes of clearance if you must go to hotham or buller when it's dumping or better still just go to NSW. As ***** as that sounds you're dealing with ego trippers that think they're running a Swiss alpine resort at 3,000m and have a massive fear of being sued by retard drivers who run off the road (and there actually are plenty every time it snows). No amount of logic, empirical evidence or examples from overseas where it actually snows is going to change their minds. Alpine Way always seems to open after a few plow runs so it's no big deal waiting it out unless you're racing for first lifts. The NSW RMS guys always seem to decide it's safe just before lunch or morning/afternoon tea time.

Im starting to think the, 'no snow socks' is more about protecting the 'mates' who run businesses hiring a specific snow chain design.......what's so special about our snow issues?.
If you're not going into the village parking areas but simply transiting from Bright to Omeo on the highway it seems sus to me.
