    Question 3 Year Service Confusion

Hi Folks, my Golf is just about to celebrate its 3rd birthday and coincidentally has done exactly 45,000 km. So all I need is a 45K/3YR service right? Unfortunately it's not so simple.

The previous owner did quite high mileage when the car was new so here's how it was serviced:
    May '09 0 km delivery
    November '09 15K service
    May '10 30K service
    June '11 2YR service (36,000 km)

Now according the the VW Dealer where the car was sold, it is now due for its FOURTH service, i.e. 60K/4YRs, for which they would love to charge me $1165. However I maintain that because the car is only 3 years old and has done 45K, then that's the service that is required. As far as I can tell, apart from some additional inspections, the only difference at 60K is a set of spark plugs which my car shouldn't need yet.

    Would appreciate your opinions, thanks.

P.S. Dealer also tryed to talk me into a 'DSG Service' ($500). Of course we all know the 7 speed DSG doesn't need servicing...

Have you tried contacting an independent vw specialist to see what they say or another dealer?

Initially rang a couple to get 45K quotes only. Thought I'd call dealer as a comparison, only to get the confusing advice.

It's just +1 year or +15,000km from your last service. Whichever comes first.

    Your last service was at 36,000km + 15,000km = 51,000km > 45,000km. Not this.
    But it's almost +1 year. 2+1 = 3rd year service!

How are they justifying the 4th year service?

In addition to the oil and oil filter change, your car may or may not need the following work, depending on what was done in the previous services, and when they were done.

    • Pollen filter should be changed every 30 000 km or 2 years. If it was replaced as part of the 30k service back in May 2010, then it's due.
    • Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years. If it was replaced as part of the 30k service back in May 2010, then it's due.
    • Air filter is also due. Should be changed every 45 000 km or 3 years.

You can replace the spark plugs at the next service, they aren't due until 60 000 km or 4 years.

Your next service would be the 60k/4yr, which normally includes the pollen filter and brake fluid, so it would be up to you to inform them and make sure they don't carry out the work (if they're due now).

By the fact that it's already had 3 x services

Think I'll go off the Independant's recommendation. Even if he does the 60K service it's only $580...

Hahaha...They probably have enough work not to stoop to servicing VW. Bloody snobs.

    Hi.

Not sure if this fits in here or in the engine failure thread??(sorry)

I purchased my car(09 118TSI) in March this year and only found out last week that the base engine was changed in Nov last year(which by the way, is doing my head in, where can I discuss that?!!)

So, car is due for scheduled 3 year service in about 3 weeks time(car only on 26.5k kms) however new engine has only done about 4k.

Spoke to 2 diff dealerships...1 advised stay on schedule as per book but the other said I should start as per new engine?? Obviously though, other things need to be checked also. I'm not really a "hands-on" person when it comes to cars so please no "do it yourself"

    My plan is as follows:
Do 36 month service minus oil change(as its still "new")...therefore i believe only checking...
In Nov when engine is 1 year old, do a filter and oil change
In June next year, do 48 month service.

By then, everything should be back in order, just that my engine is 20k less than the rest...

    Any advice appreciated!!

    Thanks

I wondered what would happen if a new engine was put in.... Does the warranty start on the engine again?
Other stuff needs replacing/service of course so I think what you have in mind is right.
