Slow death of a 118TSI

^ correct me if im wrong, but i think "Pilots" car is a manual which seem to have a much better reliability rate than the DSG ones. Because the DSG always wants to be in the highest gear possible i believe they labour the engine and cause the engine to detonate (under load at low RPM) much more easily than the manuals.

My brothers mk6 118tsi manual (which use to be my old car) started missing firing cylinder 4 really bad last Friday night just got diagnosed with low compression.

Car has had all software updates alway run on 98ron and never laboured. Didn't show any signs and failing, still had good power.

Lucky I sold it to him with extended warranty as the warranty got approved this afternoon and it's getting a full rebuild.

Car has done 44k Kms.

So when my son wanted a 'no interest' loan for new car.
I gave him the Golf instead, and bought a Passat. I thought it would be even more comfortable
Passat good car, but hard suspension not suited to bumpy country roads.

Lucas do you know if anyone has stats for the 118? In terms of failure rates? If lean is really an issue there should be a continuous stream of complaint threads I gather.

This is a MAP table from the stock tune, posted up by Mark from Recode in Sydney. He is on this forum as well as several others - he knows his tuning and knows VW's. Cant run much leaner than that: Parso's Golf R... - Page 191 (if you read the previous page he talks about how lean they run).

Sorry to hear mate - thankfully you have the warranty to fall back on and your brothers car will get a rebuilt engine.

I bet piston no 4 has a hole in it (due to detonation). Piston no 4 seems to always be the one that goes bang.

Can anyone say what a faulty n80 valve does on these engines? Is it just for emissions or does it affect the car's performance?

My n80 purge valve caused no driving issues except if you sat still with the car running and lightly pressed the throttle it would jump straight to 1400rpms and miss the ones in between, so no smooth acceleration. No engine light but got a soft code for incorrect flow. Clearing this code has fixed the issue for me.
