Ouch, now the images have been fixed, that ran so lean! I had an old Datto in the 90s and cracked a couple of pistons, it was white like that...(running twin Webbers, compression ratio too high also).
I am SO glad we got rid of our 118TSI wagon, after new engines, clutches, wheel bearings etc, even if it cost us $30K to upgrade to a diesel Mk7 wagon!

Can one tell if an engine is running lean before any warning lights pop up???
Also, how does the white residue imply running lean?
Subscribed. Good luck!
Can you link to where you read about the improvements VW has done to this engine over the years? I have a CAVD from 2012 and I always wonder how long it will last. Currently doing 72,000 km.
I have logged newer model twin charged vehicles and found them to run down well into the 11:1 a/f which should be nice & safe.
Get someone with a VCDS cable who knows how to use it and go log your lambda values on some full throttle runs.'or take the car to a dyno and get them to log your a/f ratios with the sniffer up the exhaust pipe. The dyno method isnt quite as accurace but will give you a reasonable idea.
From memory the white residue is due to excessive nitrogen being produced due to the lean fuel mixture and excessive heat. Basically that white powder look is not good.
