a slight miss or hesitating during WOT (10/2012 GTI)

    Hi,

I've a completely stock manual 10/2012 GTI with 32,000. 2750km since last service. I've noticed a strange sensation over the last three or four months. Wondering if anyone had some thoughts on it.

When (for example) in 3rd gear at lowish revs (1200 or so) I like to go WOT and feel the torque rise and propel me along. What I've noticed is as revs rise (between 1200 and maybe 2200/2400) There are little blips in the delivery, suggesting either a slight timing retardation or some other ECU intervention.

Wondering if anyone had experienced this, perhaps I'm not describing it correctly?

    Cheers
    Justin

Have it scanned to see what the missfire counter is reading. These are known to have the odd coil pack or injector issue.

Also look into running an intake cleaner through it, like Subaru Upper Intake Cleaner, or the similar product that Liqui Moly sells.

I ran the Nulon foaming one through ours the other day, idle on start up is so much better, might be a placebo, but it runs a lot smoother as well, coincidently, it's easily getting 700km to a tank these days, I think it's just pure coincidence with the timing of that though

I had the missus on the accelerator pedal and I squirted it through the intake where the breather goes into it at the manifold itself.

Having direct injection, they suffer from carbon build-up around in the intake. So yeah, you probably did it some good.

I have had these types of symptoms on separate occasions. Early on in my ownership I had a few misfires etc, then a coil pack failed, and then another failed when they went for a test drive after fixing the first one - so they replaced the lot under warranty.

Recently I had a few wierd misfires, and a few rough cold starts. 3 weeks ago I went to start my car, timing chain skipped, resulting in catastrophic engine failure (valves through pistons). Apparently due to a known issue with timing chain tensioners in the earlier 2.0TSI engines. VW has a TPI out for it. Full engine replacement required in my case. My advice is to be proactive and have your timing chain tensioner checked out while still under warranty. Not trying to be alarmist, but I think it's worth it. If it is questionable they will most likely replace the tensioner and chain, as it's much cheaper than a new engine obviously... My engine is most likely being replaced at no cost under good will, but much easier and less stressful if you get it sorted while still in warranty if it is an issue.
