Sharp Brakes

OK to cut a long story short I've recently purchased a MK6 Golf and overall I am very happy with my new car but the brakes are incredibly sharp...It's not really an issue when I am driving along at 40mph but in stop start traffic I find when I press down on the brake pedal I seem to get very little feedback then it suddenly grabs...I don't know if this is due to brake assist intervening or if brake technology has simply moved on since I last bought a car but I've owned quite a few German cars in the past including a MK4 Golf and a E46 318 and both of those cars were a lot gentler and more progressive...So back to the question...is this due to brake assist? If so is there any way I can either tone down the setting or disable it completely.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Tia folks

The Mk6 brakes are quite touchy and can take a little bit of getting used to, but they're still progressive and easy to modulate. What you're describing isn't brake assist either.

I'd suggest you get your dealer or a mechanic check the brake setup - pads, disc widths and condition, fluid etc. Might need a service and some adjustment.

Brake assist only kicks in when you perform an emergency stop - sudden and very heavy brake application - it's very rare to engage
(There is also hill assist where the brakes are held on when you remove your foot from the brake until you hit the gas)

The overly sensitive brake pedal at low speeds takes time to get used to
When you adjust to it, you will find stop start and round town driving less fatiguing as you use very little brake pressure

It's normal for the Mk6 — has been toned down again on the Mk7.

Might be due to their choice of pads combined with the usual over-soft Euro discs.

I fond I got used to it after a while, but passengers always remarked on it.

Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA)

Our hydraulic brake assist system (HBA) comes to your aid in emergency or panic braking situations. The brake assist realises from the speed at which you brake that you need full braking power. It automatically boosts the brake pressure up to the ABS control threshold for as long as you keep the brake pedal pressed down. If you then ease off the pedal, the system will reduce the brake pressure again to match the brake pedal's position. This safety function can substantially shorten your car's stopping distance, although it's so smooth in operation you'll hardly notice it working

My mk6 is 3 years old and I still find it touchy occasionally, especially if I've been driving another car for a while. They stop on a dime when it matters tho!

When I first got our Van (T5GP) I though it was bloody touchy, although after a little while I had no issues moving between my Mk3 and the Van... then I got a Mk6! That's a whole new level of touchy! Again it took a little while, but you do get used to it (then every thing else feels really crappy )
