    1. Does the recall program eligibility change between car owners?
    2. Should any fixes make the car more reliable for the longer term, or will there be a chance of expensive out of warranty fixes (directly stemming from the well known issues)?
    3. Do the fixes carry a warranty?
    4. Should I avoid this model/year altogether?

    Thanks!
any reason to look at this particular model? even after reading all the horror stories, there is still too much risk imo buying this car. if anything, look at the gti, or the tdi. what about the 118 is so special that makes u want that model voer the others? if its purely based on price, then it cant be more than a few thousand either way for other variants

The owner should be more than willing to either take the car to your choice of mechanic himself or let you take it after leaving a refundable deposit.

Family member is selling it, and I know it has been treated well.

yeah, just because a family member is selling something isnt enough reason to buy it. do u even want the car?

    ^x2

From everyone I know who owns/has owned the 118 DSG; they tend to say "steer clear" of the car. I would hate the uncertainty that comes with buying the car...If you genuinely want the car then by all means do it - if it's just to help a family member out then you should get the car you want; nothing worse than buying it, only to regret the purchase 6 months down the track.

I might do some research myself on known issues and see if I can sus it out myself.

As of today though there are HEAPS of MK6 GTI's on the market! Maybe everyone's gettinf ready to upgrade to the MK7 haha.

Also another question; would you guys wait til the MK7 lands before buying a GTI or get them now while they're in EOFY sales etc. For some reason I don't see the price of the MK6's dropping that much or at all.

    Cheers,
    Damian
You can't expect a VW specialist to look it over in full without paying them. They are in business too and are not charities. Pay then the couple of hundred bucks to look it over. I just bought a investment property and paid nearly a grand for a building and pest inspection. No difference with a car either. You want piece of mind and insurance, you pay for it mate

Yeah, money is not the issue for getting the mechanic to go over it. I'm happy to pay an extra $1000 to make sure it's perfect. It's more so the fact that its a used dealer, and getting a VW specialist to come down and check it out might be hard - or getting the car to a specialist!

Also, I am looking at another car that has warranty until June 2014. Would you guys recommend getting the car checked out by a specialist in this case?

Some of the worst cars I've ever bought have come from family members that treated their cars well. Paid a fair price & you just have to suck it up when it goes pear-shaped.

It would have to be mega-cheap to make it worthwhile.

    May 2011 GTI

    Hi Guys,
I've just started looking around for a MKVI GTI and a family friend found out and has said he is looking to sell his.
It's a May 2011 Manual 5 door with approx 25,000 kms. I know the car has been pretty well looked after and he as just put some new Pirelli p7 tyres.

What I am wanting to know is what do you guys think it's worth?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Mudgee

Hey buddy - the question of "what its worth" will vary somewhat depending on any options it has fitted. You could be anywhere from say $28-32k for one with no options or only lightly optioned, up to mid 30's for a heavily optioned one.

    Im talking about things like.....

    - Sat Nav
    - Leather seats
    - Sunroof
    - 18inch Detroit rims
    - Reverse camera
    - Xenon headlights
    - Bluetooth / Media Interface for music

See here for an example of a GTi with a few mods and similar km's to the one you are looking at: For Sale: Mk6 GTI (2011.5), 5dr DSG, Carbon Steel
2017 Ford Fiesta ST the go kart

    2015 Audi SQ5 bi-turbo V6 TDI family hauler
