    Hey all,

In market for first Golf. Either a 103TDI, 90TSI or GTD (If can convince wife).

    Wife wants
    - Features!
    - Reverse sensors,
    - Reverse camera (ideal, but not essential)
    - Sat Nav
    - Safety

    I want:
    - Performance (hence, GTD or GTi).
    - Lowest KM's for the price
    - Ideally Diesel (Performance where I'd use it)
    - DSG

She wants to spend 15k, I think we won't get that. I think 20-25 more likely.

Is it possible to get aftermarket sensors/cam/SatNav fitted? Would we be better (financially) by buying an higher model (ie: GTD!!!), or fitting afterwards and making a few mods?

    Thanks for any help.

Good point. Have to do some more research but wife had a quick look and isn't that ken on the extra size of the Octavia. She really wanted a 'smaller' car, but the extra space, features and price might be the clincher, especially considering we are having a kid in a couple of months.

What can I say to convince her a GTD/i would be worthwhile over a 103TDI/90TSi, with an RNS510 and reverse camera installed?

Thanks for the Otavia suggestion, too. Food for thought.

If you've got a kid coming along then bipass the Golf & head straight to the Octavia. If you don't then you'll just be back here in 12 months asking what model Octavia is best.

Go and have a look at a brand new 2014 103tsi Ambition (possibly an Ambition Plus) hatch. Manuals are about $22500 & DSG are about $24k. You'll get a 2013 Ambition demo with <2000km for under $20k. I think something like that would make a really good family car & you'll find the power/torque is adequate.

I can't help you with how to argue the case with your missus. In our house the agreement is that I don't get vetoe on what dresses, shoes, make-up (or whatever else is her area of expertise) she should get and she doesn't vetoe my choices on cars, tools, electronics, computers, etc. Sure we discuss it but ultimately the subject matter expert makes the choice.

    Hi Guys,

I know this has been done to death, but I'm in the market for a few year old Golf in QLD and at the moment the best deal I can get on an auto is the 118TSI. There are a few available for around the 13-14 mark with under 100k's on them. In the opinion of users who own them or have experience with them is the criticism justified or just a beat up?

I would be keen as a 118TSI (particularly if I find one with the sports pack) is similar to a GTI for 10K or more less.

    Cheers!

Don't do it. The critism is justified.
The engines run too lean & the 7 speed is very variable in reliability. Either spring the extra money for a GTI or get a diesel (DSG is 6 speed wet & very good) or get a 90tsi (still 7 speed but at least the engine is good). Or learn to drive a manual.... or look at a Skoda Octavia - the 118tsi is a single turbo 1.8L and very good (still the 7 speed though)

Fair enough, I can drive a manual but my partner doesnt so thats no an option. I didnt realise there were still problems with the 7 speed, I have one in my tiguan and its awesome, never missed a beat, I've read its the DQ500 not the DQ200 so not sure if that makes a difference. Seems a shame to purchase a 90TSI for more money and less features/performance so I guess I will look at the diesels and the Skoda.

    Thanks for your advice.
