How does one determine what version of the firmwear they have on their own?
VAGCOM?
or can the headunit display the version somewhere?
Thanks Coreying for the info on Lame!
I dropped into Barloworld today to ask about why SDHC cards don't work in my car.
What I was hoping to hear
"Yes - your right, it appears your car was delivered with an old firmware version. Bring the car back next week and we will upgrade it. Should take about an hour."
What I actually heard
Service Rep 1 : SD card? What's an SD card?
Me: It a small memory card (shows card) that you can store and play music from.
SR1: Oh, that a bit high tech for me, I'll get Service Rep 2
5 minutes later...
SR2: No you can't use SDHC cards only 1GB SD cards work
Me: I know you could only use up to 2 GB SD cards in previous versions but my owner's manual says I can use up to 32 GB SDHC cards
SR2: Its a misprint....
Me: But I have spoken to another owner who got their car 2 days before me and they are able to play SDHC cards, in fact lots of people can. Can you tell me what the current firmware version is?
SR2: No
Me: Can you tell me what firmware version is is installed in my car?
SR2: No
Me: Can you tell me how to check my firmware version?
SR2: No - you will have to leave the car with us for a full day for us to look at it.
Me: Ok when?
SR2: 4th March

This works on mine:
Open the car, don't insert the key.
Turn the unit on and hold the setup button down till the display changes.
If you see AM/FM/DAB continue to hold it down to the next display.
Press versioninfo (on mine it's second from the top)
You can scroll up and down through the displayed details.
Hi Idler
I'm following your instructions but it never gets past the FM AM DAB setup screen. I've held the setup button for a full minute.
My wifes Tiguan 147 delivered late Dec 09 (MY10) doesnt support SDHC in the RNS510; I went into office works and bought a regular 2GB SD card for about $7....and it works
FYI IMHO using the SD card or even the HDD is a pain in the ass; its slow, it seems to want to constantly index tracks etc. The MDI with an ipod seems to eb a far better option, but even using that, I think its a little buggy in the sense that sometimes it seems to take a while to connect to the ipod; maybe its just out unit....
hi guys,
I just picked my car up from barloworld yesterday. To fix my engine squeek and my door trim rattling (which hasn't been fixed yet due to parts). But what they have done is updated the firmware on my RNS-510 which looks like version 2660 from looking at the my-gti.com site. They have also replaced my bluetooth module and i was surprised to discover i now have voice command capability . I haven't tried with a SDHC card yet. But will do later tonight and post my result.
JPH, Like you i got the same response about the manual being a typo. I would say they are only covering their own backs just in case a customer happens to have a revision A RNS-510 and promised a firmware upgrade would fix the issue. So i would just be patient and book your car in for them to take a look at. Might as well also nit-pick at the faults and get them to fix it while you're at it.
Also, if you have waxed/sealed your car, remember to tell them not to wash your car, as i got my car back with all of my sealants striped off
Liquid, which bluetooth module do you have? And what voice commands are recognised? Answering... dialing...address book lookup?

Hi Murphy,
I purchased the premium bluetooth kit. Previously they installed the fiscon branded kit in my car, during service they found some issues with the unit as i reported the fiscon unit actually cuts out intermittently and i would lose the display on the MFD.
Right now, when i pair it up with my phone, it simply shows up as "volkswagen" so i have no idea what unit i have been given. Is there a way to find out?
i haven't fully tested all of the functions yet, but so far i have been able to dial my address book just by saying the name, selecting radio stations, selecting tracks on my CD player and also starting and selecting memorised destinations on the GPS. Only limitations is if i have to enter a new street addresses, i would be prompted to enter it in manually.
Let me know what you would want me to try, i'll test tonight and let you know.
If anyone wants a 16GB card for $32 ... I found this: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/22199
Did you purchase the Fiscon aftermarket, then buy the VW premium kit after you had trouble? Or did they install the Fiscon AS the premium kit?
I'm currently using a BlueAnt, which I don't like for two reasons. One, I need to charge it; two, no integration with the car. However, the standard VW bluetooth doesn't offer enough incentive to buy since it doesn't offer voice dialling, so I need to go for a premium kit.
Since I need iPhone pairing, the VW premium kit is no good, plus they can jam the $2000+ price. I'm still deciding on the Fiscon or the Skoda. The Skoda seems to have it all, so I might actually head over to their dealer and see if I can order the OEM part. The part is blocked in the VW service centre's computer.
Speaking of which, the last time I dealt with the service centre (about a month ago), I was told that there was no firmware update available for the RNS510 - despite the fact that others have been updating their firmware for months. I can still only use 2GB SD cards. Perhaps the firmware hadn't "officially" been released? So where is the firmware on www.my-gti.com coming from, then?
