    Road Noise at 100kph

    Hi All,

I have a golf wagon 118 Tsi 2000km old and am mostly happy with it.
however the normally quiet cabin gets quite noisey when i hit 100km.

I am not talking about tyre noise or traffic noise rather wind noise coming form what seems like the frame behind my right shoulder. It's like when you leave a window partially open or don't shut the door properly. Is this normal? or should i take it to my dealer?

sounds like a seal is broken/miss fitted, i would return it to the dealer

Has your wagon got roof racks?

Good point... leaving roof racks installed creates a racket! You may not notice it with most normal cars cause they're noisey anyway, but you'd definitely notice that at speed in a Golf. Plus, it uses more fuel too!

Yeah worth checking the roof rack - fyi my 103TDI MK IV is dead quiet at that kind of speed - except for tyre noise IMO!

I had a Mazda once with factory roof rack / rails - I had to remove them as at around 100 kph the bloody things let out a very loud whistle!!

Yes the golf wagon comes fitted with roof racks which are permanent , thanks for the replies, I might go back to my dealer and test drive another wagon to compare

The rails may be permanent, but surely any beams (racks) crossing the roof from one side to the other are removable...

I am getting racks confused with rails, no I don't have any racks just the permanent rails. Do you think they are creating wind noise?

It's possible, but then practically everyone customer would be complaining about it... still, maybe worth a drive to your dealer to take out a car without the rails and compare to yours... although maybe worthwhile taking another one with the rails out too to see whether it does it as well
