    The RNS unit actually dims itself when it's dark, which is rather clever. I have also found that the speedo will change its brightness according to the amount of light in the cabin. Hope this helps.

    You can also simply select from the onscreen menu to turn off the display while keeping the radio, nav, media playing.

    Speaking of things that change according to conditions, my Tom Tom speaks directions louder at high speeds to compensate for increased noise.
    In my previous car, this generally went unnoticed
    However my new Golf does such a good job of insulating against those noises that the different volume from the Tom Tom is very noticable

    Does it have an adjustable sensitivity, like the Golf's stereo's speed sensitive volume does?

    i was told on the weekend when we picked up our new Tig that the RNS510 does have speed sensitive volume.

    The brightness on ours is not a problem at night. If it were to become distracting i would turn off the display.

    thanks guys for all this advice - uve appeased my concern!

    this is my first VW and first new car in my life - thought i cant go wrong with a VW GTI...

    haha not quite yet....

    about to fork out alot of money just buying the car little own performance enhancements... (unless u know someone who will do it for free?!)
