There's no problem with the unit at night. I don't find it distracting at all. If anything I find my self more distracted by my fuel consumption on the MFD!

Believe it or not but Volkswagen use dimming at night of the interior instruments including the head units so they don't blind or distract you. In fact I can't think of a car I've been over the last 30 years that hasn't had dimming of interior instruments and head units.

Love the sarcasm - however VW did not get it right with the RCD310 or whatever you call the unit that is in my car. The rest of the instruments all dim satisfactorily. The head unit dims several magnitudes but not sufficiently. At full dim it IS distracting at night. I wish there was an option to blank the screen (without turning the unit OFF) until I interacted with it, in the same manner as occurs with the climate controls displays there upon.

Crappy video cameras (or camera operators) can't take into account the fact that the majority of the "scene" is dark whereas a very small portion of it is bright. Human eyes do a much better job of this - although the reason they say to not watch TV in the dark, and yet we watch movies in the dark, is due to the % of the field of vision that the different screens occupy...

Anyway - don't trust crappy videos - the RNS510 at night is fine

I've experienced no problems at all at night with the sat nav on. There's an option for day or night scheme and I prefer the day colours and even then there's no brightness problem..

The RNS unit actually dims itself when it's dark, which is rather clever. I have also found that the speedo will change its brightness according to the amount of light in the cabin. Hope this helps.

You can also simply select from the onscreen menu to turn off the display while keeping the radio, nav, media playing.

Speaking of things that change according to conditions, my Tom Tom speaks directions louder at high speeds to compensate for increased noise.
In my previous car, this generally went unnoticed
However my new Golf does such a good job of insulating against those noises that the different volume from the Tom Tom is very noticable
