    Reverse camera GTI 2012

    Hi all,

Hasn’t taken me long to look at adding to the car, considering I picked it up just over over a week ago.

I would like to install a reverse camera and am looking at my options.

The original head unit is not the rns 510 so I am unable to add the camera to the head unit.

I am thinking of replacing the head unit with a pioneer/kenwood type set up or a reverse camera displayed on the mirror.

Any advice including specific unit models, suppliers/installers, would be great.

Also your thoughts on the best way to go given the two options.

    Thank you in advance.

Hey mate, I'd personally recommend the eonon head units, full Android super fast and responsive as long as you get a decent model I've got the ga7153 I think, you can buy the reverse camera with it and it's in my opinion pretty damn good quality for the price you pay, far cheaper than a top brand head unit !!

I've installed my own OEM unit (and a few for other people over the years). It was 2011/12 but I did the RNS510 + OEM flippy badge in my Golf. If you’re keen

This was my install in my Cab, it’s much the same except you can run the cabling through the roof lining when you have one!
Success! RVC install into MK6 Cab

It’s not a bad job to tackle yourself if you’re confident enough in removing trim pieces and playing with wiring.

The alternative most go for these days is the RCD330+, an OEM unit with CarPlay and Android Auto support (just make sure you get the right model for one/both of those).
Replacing RNS 510 with RCD 330+

I’ve also installed Pioneer units, just remember that anything not OEM will require some soldering to get the different plug in there. Our Multivan is running a AVH-Z3100-DAB which also works very well.

When it comes to the camera itself, you need to do a little research to work out which one will be appropriate for you. The flip out badge is very neat, but you need either a converter (from 4 pin to RCA) or an after market version with a composite connection out of the box. Alternatively there are number plate light mounting units, again make sure you get the right connection(s).

Wow, so much to contemplate. Thanks guys. Will do some research.

By the way, any experiences with a branded head unit and camera?

If I were to install the rns 330 or 510, would I have to buy the badge flip camera or can a different camera be installed?

Also if I were to find the original camera VW badge, could it be fitted to an after market unit or is it OEM head unit specific?

I should have added earlier, they were not recommendations for those particular items, just the first things that came up in google for me to link as examples. No idea on the quality or cost of those particular ones.

    Thanks Hawk.

Does anyone have experience with aftermarket head units such as pioneer/kenwood and accompanying reverse cameras? If so, how does the image quality compare to OEM?

I am trying to weigh up whether or not I will have better functionality (steering controls) and quality with an aftermarket unit.

The 330plus will set me back about $300, plus camera install. Aftermarket unit will cost around $400-$500 plus install including camera.

Thanks to all those responding, your input is very much appreciated.
