I'm positive that there is a rev limiter. Most manufacturers do that to protect the engine. Even in the DSG, if you were in manual mode you could go above the red line before it shifted you automatically.
Just two queries regarding a manual GTi,
Does it have a rev limiter ? I did a net/forum search and couldn't find an answer, apart from the comment that there is a rev limiter if the car is in neutral.
Not being used to a turbo, I went to change gear at the 6200rpm red line and noticed that the revs hit about 6600 before I actually put the clutch in. ( no I don't make a habit of it )
Also this may also be a turbo characteristic, but I get the impression, that when going quickly from a standing start that the car has more noticeable acceleration in 2nd gear than in 1st. Is there a torque limiter in 1st maybe or just my imagination ? for instance I know some manual cars like the 159 Alfa V6 have a lower rev limit in 1st, compared to the other gears.
As this my first VW, just wanting to learn it characteristics,
thanks

I'd definitely think so. It would be crazy of them not to have something such as this in place.

are you flashed?
stock redline is 6200 and you should bounce on the limiter for a manual or DSG.
When flashed this redline goes to 6700. In my dsg when manually selecting a gear it will bounce off this limit for a second or so then change up
The rev limiter in most modern VWs is a fuel cut I believe so it doesnt bouce off the limit. It just dies.
DSG cars wont ever really see the rev limiter properly as the car will shift up automatically. It will do its characteristic fart though!
And yes the cars make more boost in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears than they do in 1st and 2nd.
Red line is 6200 but cut off is 6800 for a stock gti

Thanks, for answers.
no the car isn't flashed, (yet - maybe).
but good to know where the rev-limiter is and how it works.
certainly enjoying the engine characteristics, quite a change from my recent sensible family cars and certainly a change from the modified v8s of my younger days.
cheers
