One thing has just occurred to me, that the ECS kit is designed for the MK5 Golf (I think), which might mean I need extra parts to make it work with the MK6 Golf. If anyone knows more about this than I do, I'd love to hear from you.

No, you need less parts — it's not as complex on the Mk 6.

Speaking as one who dunnit, it's still something of a hassle, tho'.

oh ok. reason I asked was because of this posted on my-gti.com

For Mark VI install until I develop a new guide for that the following changes need to be made to the list.
The only difference from my guide for the Mark V (Mark VI guide I’ll try and get up this week) is the followingChange the following two items
    • 1J0 972 923 (1J0972923) – 2 pin connector (connects to reverse light fitting)
    • 1J0 972 712 (1J0972712) – 2 pin connector (connects to reverse light connector on harness)
    to
    • 1J0 972 924 (1J0972924) – 3 pin connector (connects to reverse light fitting)
    • 191 972 713 (191972713) – 3 pin connector (connects to reverse light connector on harness)
Change the quantity of the following
    • 000 979 129 (000979129) – Connector Repair wire x 1 (2 connectors required)
    to
    • 000 979 129 (000979129) – Connector Repair wire x 2 (3 connectors required)
    And delete the following item
    • 3C8 827 861 A (3C8827861A) – Passat Drain Tube
The main difference is that the reverse connector that we are taking power from has 3 connectors instead of two on the Mark V and that handle mounts lower on the Mark VI so the extension is not required for the drain tube.

Well, my friend and I went about installing the ECS Camera kit yesterday. started off by pulling off the side and front trim and running the cables, while he took apart the hatch and replaced the badge and did the wiring. Next thing I know he's saying we'll have to go find some loom's on some other parts cars (crashed Golf's in the warehouse) in order to build this loom, as per ozmale's instructions (good thing I printed them out). I thought it was supposed to be plug'n'play, but he seemed to know what he was talking about so I let him go.

I ran the cable down the right side of the car, since someone mentioned they did it along the left side and the power wire wasn't long enough (my fuse box is on the right side). The cable still wasn't long enough so we had to join it to another wire (yet more soldering + heatshrink). It also turned out that ECS had wrapped the power wire around the video cable the wrong way - one end is designed to plug into the back of the fuse box - however since it's designed for the Mk5 it wouldn't have fitted in my fuse box anyway - watch out for that in any case. Didn't like the ide of soldering behind the fuse box, but it works as expected now.

So I'm packing up and got hunting for the bag that the badge came in so I can put the old badge in there, and I come across the plug'n'play loom that could've saved us a few hours - no idea if that method would've had a few of it's own hassles but we laughed a bit.

The important thing is I now have a reversing camera (reason being I have to reverse up my sloping driveway, and a family has moved in next door where the kids like to play on the street, and ride bikes/scooters - an accident waiting to happen if you ask me. Let's just hope this helps prevent one.

Mate, that's good to hear someone successfully installed the ECS kit. It sold out real quick. Hopefully once they get more stock in, I can grab one of these.

Quick question for anyone who knows - (how) can I get the guide lines to turn with the steering wheel when reversing? They just stay straight regardless. Part of me thinks this has something to do with not having OPS, but then why should that matter, as long as I have a steering wheel (and VCDS) I don't see why this shouldn't work in theory.

There's a (more expensive, of course) unit used in up-market VAG cars that does this by way of an extra black box — the device sold to we plebes is self-contained and the camera view is fixed.

It might be possible to fit it to a Golf, but I doubt anyone has chanced their arm as yet.

Looks like the Golf is the only one not to have this feature:
    VW Reversing Camera

Would be interesting to see if it's retro-fitable, not that's necessary for a small-ish Golf, but a nice novelty nonetheless.
