Reset Software Gearbox - Hardware required?

I just had my 30,000km service on my 77TSi and the gearbox is considerably nicer to drive once I asked it to be rewetted. However since the 15,000km service, the laggy 1st and 2nd gear (Drive and Sport Mode) returns within a month or so.

The local VW garage (not dealer) asked $50 for me just to get the software reset on the gearbox.

I'm wondering if I can acquire the hardware and reset the gearbox myself through OBDII port (?) or wherever the dealer plugs in their diagnostic?

If it is indeed possible, what do I need and what sort of costs am I looking at?

It's sad I have to resort to fixing this ridiculous fuzzy logic gearbox myself =/

You need a VCDS cable, and there is a specific procedure that you must go through including driving in a particular manner.

The cable is typically around $350, have a look in the VCDS technical resources section, plenty of info there. It does a lot more than just resetting the DSG and is pretty much on par with dealer level equipment.

Having used both extensively, I wouldn't quite say that VCDS is on par with VAS-PC.

All things aside, has the car actually been diagnosed as having any sort of fault? This kinda sounding like a case of putting a band-aid on the symptom, not the problem.

Surely software updates to make ur car function as it should would be party of the warranty and should be free?!

Well, as close to dealer level as you can get without forking out $3k or however much VAS-PC costs I suppose - important thing is it can do pretty much anything an end-consumer may want to do.

Re the DSG, it's one of those unsolved mysteries. Most people report the same issue and I can confirm the gearbox is smoother after a reset and the lag will slowly come back. 1 month is unusual but it could have to do with the reset procedure not being properly followed and the way the car is driven afterwards. Best solution = DSG tune IMO

Also the DSG reset is part of a service, it is not a software update. It's typically done only during DSG service at 60,000km and to be done properly you do need to drive it in a certain manner afterwards, so the dealer will charge unless they're feeling extra nice or are just skipping the driving procedure after the reset.

DSG reset is not part of a service. Not even when the DSG oil and filter are replaced.

There may be software updates, if there is a documented update that supports a particular concern.

Are you sure? I know the procedure is recommended when the DSG oil and filter are replaced, some dealers do them some don't. I service with an independent VW specialist though, he does it every time.

If there was a software update it should be free (some dealers try to charge you anyway) but I was just saying it's normal to be charged if you're just asking the dealer for a DSG reset.

100% sure.

It would be part of the test plan for servicing the DSG on VAS-PC if it were.

Software updates, where applicable and of course, if the customer has complained about the DSG operation are free if the vehicle is under warranty. The dealership will not, and should not perform software updates outside of normal warranty repair procedures off their own bat.

DKN - what is a DSG tune? Is it permanent? What sort of cost am I looking at? If it can fix this problem permanently I'll do it.

Does the VCDS cable connect directly to the OBDII port and straight to a PC/MAC laptop? Is there other software required? Maybe another control/communication box in between?

I posted my experience with the 7-speed DSG in the Gearbox Shudder thread. When I went to Volkswagen Driving Experience I spoke with the tech man on hand who services the cars - he said VW has a "fuzzy logic" system that learns as you drive and adjusts the gear changes as you drive. This system cannot be disabled or switched off.

The problem is I do mainly 90% highway driving and 10% city driving so it probably adjust itself to the slow movement of the gas pedal during highway driving and I find it downright dangerous during intersections and I get at least 500ms to 1sec or more lag during first gear and second gear - especially second gear.

When I brought in the vehicle in for the 15,000km service at the dealer, they flashed the software which included the gearbox and it was fantastic to drive afterwards, felt like a new car. Within a month, the lag ever so slowly resurface again and it really annoys me as it makes the vehicle quite unpredictable and I continually having to shift to manual taking off from a stop, entering an intersection, or anything at lowish speed below 40km/hr.

My 30,000km service was done at an independent VW service centre. He claims he cannot flash the software but can reset it. It did improve the latency noticeably when the gearbox part of the software was reset but not as responsive as when the 15,000km service when the whole software was flashed.
