Via the phone/email, superb service from Jadd @ Chatswood Classic Cars. Mate ended up buying a Golf R from him, delivery around Sept 2011. I was on the hunt for a Polo GTI at the time but ended up settling on a Canberra based Golf GTI demo.

Bill Buckle in Brookvale - I am still waiting for my 'promised' return phone call in February, now, April 15.

Well when I first started looking we made an appointment with Gerald Slaven at Belconnen for a test drive. When we arrived we had to wait for some time before being served but it was a sat and very busy, and it wasnt a big deal. Trent spent a fair bit of time with us - we didn't get to take the car out by ourselves - I didn't even know that varied between dealers. (anyway I was too nervous to take it for a real drive with liability issues but my partner did and he loved the car). I didn't really have a substantial problem with any of the dealers we dealt with. However I do feel that at some point I was not being told the complete truth.

At first we were told there would be a 4 month wait. Another dealer said 6, another 8 and so forth. Look, this is not the actual issue because I note some people on this forum have waited various periods for their cars, but when the dealer went through the list of 'available' cars (ie cars on their way), they said there was one car matching my specification but without a reversing camera. He said it could not be retroffited. Barlowworld Mascot (after we requested a quote) told us they had an available car coming - without sat nav or reverse camera but they would fit them (they assured me it was the same as factory and it appears to be so). Clearly this can be retroffited when i was told it couldn't. When I first got the quote from Mascot, it was higher than the other quotes but I spoke to them about a few points and in the end they addressed those points (while I paid a little bit more than the other quotes), I got a car within a month rather than 4+. We did give try to negotiate with the canberra dealer because of it being a factory order, they wouldn't budge on price and we went with barlowword because there is no reason why I would have not paid a little more to get a car to my spec much sooner.

I dealt with Nadine at Barlowworld - she was very helpful and there was no issues with the process at all. I didn't go through the whole sales process with them (ie test driving etc), so cannot comment on that part.

Hey Cher. I thought I'd clear something up for you. It's not that the RVC cannot technically be dealer fitted. It's just that it takes so many hours to do, that it's not financially viable to do so. For example, many dealers will charge ~$400 for the first service, and an independent may charge $250. Yet that same independent charges $1800 for the fitting of an RVC. So you could imagine how much the dealer would charge...

Sounds as though Barloworld Mascot identified that as a way to get the sale, and the higher price reflects the fact that they had to account for the huge labour time to retro fit the camera.

In the end, as long as you're happy, then it's a win for you

Thanks Corey, thats good to know. It was more expensive with Barlowworld but only a few hundred - they said that yes retrofting did cost a more but they would do it for factory prices. The price difference was that a few other dealers had more of a corporate discount. Yes Im very happy with the car!

I would like to recommend Terry Knight from Kloster VW in Newcastle. He was great from the moment we walked in the door back in December to look at the Golf R through to delivery day. Very polite, courteous answered all my questions is not a very "pushy" salesman.

I understand this thread is for salesman in Sydney, but Newcastle is only 1 hr 30 mins up the road.

By the way - when i picked up my R last Friday, they had a black R (DSG / RNS510 / Leather / 18inch wheels - not sure what other options) in stock as well as a red Adidas GTI......if anyone is interested. The black R is a demo (they have had it for a while so will be keen to shift it) and the Adidas is "brand new" from my understanding.

    Guys,
If some one is interested in buying, following are the good dealerships to talk to (they offer real good deals/prices!):
In ACT - Gerald Slaven (Contact Josh - very nice person to deal with)
In NSW & other states - National Car Search (Contact Marc - very nice person to deal with)

You can say that "Sid" referred you to them. For more info, feel free to PM.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,

Dermot at Wangara is great. He's a member here, is very helpful, and I was this close > < to purchasing my R from him - even though I'm from Sydney. He's an up front, non-mess-around guy who gave a get quote straight up. It was pretty much in line with the Sydney guys even WITH the transfer fee. In the end, I went in Sydney simply because both I and Dermot thought it would be easier for everyone to simply get it locally rather than deal with a transfer. Stand up guy
