Thread: Rear sway bar for MK6 Golf GTI

    This is what one of the technical advisers mentioned to me from ECS tuning

    Quote: If you went 24mm at the rear your are prone to drifting almost every corner as this will cause the rear to over steer, where as 22mm will create a more stable turning experience.

    Now I'm confused...??

    The stiffer the rear sway bar, the more prone to oversteer (and less prone to understeer) the car will be.

    Yeah which is why I'm leaning towards the 22mm, seems like a nice fit with the 23.6mm hollow stock front. Could always go up to stiffer setting... however ppl say 24mm on soft if like 22mm.

    I'd be inclined to go 22mm myself - it's a fairly common choice and seems to yield good results. Stiff without being overly so, and still retains some good overall balance.

    Yeah the one thing I've noticed is most ppl go stiffer the front than back... and if you went 24mm rear than that's the opposite so go figure...22mm just seems a safer bet if you don't plan on going for both and leaving the front stock. However if you went both I'd probably go 24mm RSB with 26mm FSB.

    Stiffer front is safer - cures body roll but exacerbates understeer. That's probably how the car is set up from factory in terms of balance.

    Yep, or at least make the car more neutral or adjustable on the limit. It's not like we're talking torsion bar rear suspension here.

    It's pretty hard to get FWD platforms to oversteer - and if you're doing that on the street, well...

    It's more about reducing understeer

    When you go excessively hard on the rear sway bar FWD cars can become nasty, lift off oversteer can catch you out big time

    So is 24mm considered too stiff and that's another + for 22mm?
