Why quote a price you didn't pay? It's pointless using RRP as a means of comparing the quality or performance of a tyre. All he's shown is that Dunlop RRPs are somewhere near the street price & Kumho are inflated by more than 100%.

My FIL does very similar - always quotes the RRP / rack rate / full price & not what he actually paid. I don't quite get the purpose.

The point is he has an issue with "rear tyre noise" and I don't see the issue necessarily as being what he paid for his tyres. I've driven on cheap tyres on dad's corolla and they've been quieter than more expensive sports oriented tyres (Eagle F1 directional for example) - the thread on the tyre plays a part in noise. Maybe you should have pointed this out to him since it seems like you have a past in the tyre industry ... Maybe it's not even a tyre issue ?

As to why he compares prices like your FIL, I can't answer

I don't think you read the thread fully. I was basically pointing this out to him.

Have offered some advice, as have others.

    recap
tyres - wear pattern / tread pattern / amount of wear /

    wheel alignment

    bearings

and the answer, is one of the front wheel bearings. SA said it is usually tyres, but we went for a spin and he then put up on the lift and it was front left bearing fritzed out.

Car was stolen about a year ago and when the police pulled over the turd who stole it he smashed into the kerb hard enough to screw up the rim, unfortunately it has taken a year for the bearing to then collapse

Thanks to everyone for helping (except for the hater who was just picking on my choice of tyres)

Funny how you thought the sound was coming from the back .. but it was the front wheel bearing .. it's hard to tell without having a mate to hang out the side of the car listening for the sound while you drive. Glad it's sorted either way.

You need to lift your comprehension skills & try not to BS people as much.

Just to close this thread off for those interested (off-topic haters excluded and ignored). The car is now good as new. Very smooth, amazing the difference.
SA said that nearly always the passenger side bearing - I assume they hit curbs more often.

He also said that 9 out of 10 times with the MK6 chassis , excessive road noise is caused by feathering of the tyres. He strongly suggested rotating tyres every 5,000kms (as I have read here in other threads).

BTW, I asked him about the Kumho KU39, and whilst VW don't sell them, he said he had heard nothing bad about them.
