Now i was sure it was the tyres just wearing out as they have done 40,000 kms , but i put on new tyres last week and the sound is still there.
It is not engine or transmission as putting the Golf into neutral and rolling does not change the sound.

I have tried swerving left and right, to load the wheel bearings, but there is no change to the sound when i do this.

The wheels are 17" Denver .

Any ideas ? I think i will have to take it to a mechanic unfortunately.

You can tell if it is a wheel bearing by seeing if the hub is hot after a run.

You have something against kumhos ??
I don't think they are generally very good tyres - I've had them before.

$390 for 225/45r17 KU39 - pull the other one it plays jingle bells. They are $145 each at my local tyre store.

Michelin PS3 & BS Potenza S001 are $185 and worth the extra spend

you'd be totally crazy and insane to oay $390 for kumho ku39 in 17 given that 225 45 17 is as common as it gets now.

tempe tyre and co would sell ku39 for $145. and oh yeah that is in australia (where this forum is based in).

Tempe don't carry old stock. They haven't done that for 10+ years. They have about 12 bays that are full 7 days / week & they ahve their online & eBay stores. They work on volume. I worked for one of the original volume tyre sellers back in the '80s and it wasn't unusual for us to sell on a 2% mark-up so that we could clear a truckload of tyres in a hurry before the next one came in. Tyre reps will give a great discount if you order a full pantech of tyres and they have some bonus targets to meet.

re:tyresales price.. RRP might be $365 but the street price is $211. The RRP could be $1000 but who pays RRP for tyres unless you are in the middle of the Nullabor Plain? It's like buying a Falcadore - who pays full RRP?

RRP are always inflated for tyres due to the way they are delivered, qty of order & the claims process for faulty tyres.

Get this up ya - $136

Don't think digger said he paid rrp for the Tyres did he? No one in their right mind should be paying rrp for anything nowadays. Unless it's an iphone, of course.

Did you get an alignment done at the time of fitting the kumhos? That doesn't look like a noisy pattern ... I.e. Directional Goodyear eagle f1s will make you want your stereo on LOUD all the time!

Wheel bearing is the other issue I've read/heard about. I think it was someone's Octavia on the forum.

    Hope you sort it out
