    RCD 310 randomly switches off

Hi everyone, It's been a while since I posted as the Golf has been faultless.
Just the other week, the RCD310 unit seems to randomly switch off. Turn it on, plays for seconds or could be half an hour, then just switches off.
Often if I wait 30 seconds or so it will switch back on by itself sometimes not.
It is getting more frequent and just not sure where to start looking ie the unit or perhaps a flaky fuse or something.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
    Thanks in advance

99% the unit itself internally. Can pick them up for $50. Might be worth just changing it for $50. ...PM me if you want one....VDUB...

Do they need recoding and how difficult are they to change?

I had a very similar scenario with our MK6 GTI when we got it earlier this year. It had the RCD510 and it would turn itself off and then back on randomly.

I did a scan of the car and it came back with several errors pointing to a faulty ignition switch. It was only a $50 part but man what a pain in the butt to swap over (remove airbag and steering wheel, remove steering column plastic trim, remove ignition switch (massive pain in the backside), fit the new switch and then re-install all the steering wheel components).

    Fixed the issue for me.

    Ignition switch....that sounds just super

Think I might put up with it until it really bugs me then get the car scanned and see what it pulls up.

Well VDUB who posted above seems to think that it could be the RCD310 unit in your case - for $50 its worth a try don't you think.

Or you could take the opportunity to upgrade to a RCD510 for around $250-300.

Yes...ive seen quite a few ignition switch failures but for some reason only on gti and eos....on a eos it faults the radio but also drops the windows slightly. I can scan it for codes if you want...if no codes are logged then yes radio but as above you might have ignition issues....if the ignition switch is faulty it always logs a code.....VDUB....

    +1 for the ignition switch.

Not too dear, but a bitch to replace.

Thanks for the replies. If it was the ignition switch, could it effect anything else? The radio is a nuisance but I wouldn't want it to switch the ignition off while driving on the M1.

Nah, it doesn't affect the operation of the car, just a few accessories drop out.
