I find that the freaky wipers in the dry just adds bit of character.

It's recommended (in the manual IIRC) that you leave the auto wipers off in dry conditions, and just enable the sensor in inclement weather. As stated above, dust, dirt and other factors can cause the wipers to sweep for no apparent reason. I leave mine off unless it's raining, and let the sensor control the wipe speed when it's actually raining.

That's a good tip as the phantom wipe usually results in crap being smudged across the screen and won't do much for the life of the wiper blades! That said, I usually forget to do it myself hehe

Mine has done it twice, wasnt raining but it happened as i hit a largish bump/indent on the road surface
so has something to do with the window being jarred or bumped.

This still seems to be an issue as it is doing it on my new car which I got the other day, so I guess I will get them to fix it when I get the first service done...

I've booked a time for my dealer to inspect and then order the required parts. They were surprised that it's still recurring on my brand new MY11.5

I usually keep the sensor on but at the lowest setting (since I use the rain-closing feature), then i increase the speed/sensitivity when it starts to rain moderately.

I often see this fault in VCDS too - not sure what it means exactly:

    1 Fault Found:
01520 - Rain and Light Recognition Sensor (G397)
    004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 00100100
    Fault Priority: 2
    Fault Frequency: 2
    Reset counter: 219
    Mileage: 17453 km
    Time Indication: 0

    Freeze Frame:
    Term 15 Off
    Voltage: 12.70 V
    OFF
    ON
    Term 50 Off
    OFF
    OFF
