Power loss whilst driving

Hi Guys,

I have a 2011 1.2lt Mk6 golf that randomly loses power whilst driving. I'm fairly certain it's some dud electrical wire and i can generally fix it by popping the hood and randomly hitting a few power connectors.

Naturally this solution kind of sucks and i'm hoping for a more permanent fix



If i hit some combination of the areas highlighted in red, it has a tendency to work but doesn't seem to be just one thing or another so i was hoping to get an idea on what to replace specifically. I'm thinking it's electrical leads but i'm uncertain.

When i say power loss - i mean complete lack of response from throttle, lights still work as does the radio just no response from the engine. Power steering sometimes stays on, sometimes doesn't.

What things should i replace to ensure i have a more permanent solution?

Had a similar experience recently with a Tiguan. The AC compressor is on the same belt as the alternator and the compressor would momentarily fail and then work again. Once the compressor was replaced the power losses ceased.

I'd suggest getting someone with VCDS cable to do a scan and see what your error codes say. There may be information in there.

I've had a whole bunch of codes related to cylinder misfires etc. which NRMA couldn't fix neither could the VW stealership

I think i solved it - it looks like a dud ignition lead

I pulled all 4 and the top left one has a whole bunch of white dusty powder on it whereas all the other leads are clean. I tried to clean it up a little with some isopropyl alcohol but the dusty stuff is pretty stubborn.

Anyone know what it is?

Corrosion / oxidation. Hit it with a wire brush if you can. Better still replace the plugs and cables.
