Thanks for the article, but as Guy H has stated, there is already more powerful tuning options available.

The Golf R is basically Volkswagen's version of the Audi S3. Same engine and drive train etc. The current generation S3 has been out since 2006, so you could safely say that there are LOTS of options out there, and they're all well tested by now

135i is the better option anyway, it is an extremely underrated car, maybe i'm bias because i own one, but it is seriously a very good car.

I would presume it is a better car to drive compared to a golf r (of course i haven't driven that one before).

From specs simple mods would make the golf r faster, but interior and exterior, there is no comparision.

I know people might go nuts here because it is a vw site.

Actually. interior quality is one of the things that I'm disappointed with in the 1 series.

If you compare it to the rest of the bmw family, yes. It is quite "standard" but i like how it doesn't have all the useless gadgets that the other bmw have, it in a way has the m3 blood in the 135i, got rid of any unnecessary stuff.

But apart from that the quality of the interior is quite good, the positioning of the seating is great as well. but it all depends what boxes you tick...

I have nothing to complain about the car.

But all is based on opinions.

No usable cup holder if you have the iDrive (the 2nd one is underneath the arm rest, which constantly falls down every time you brake). The glovebox is so small you can't even put a street directory in it. There is little other storage and practicality in the interior.

Sure, the seats are some of the best I've ever sat in, but the rest of the cabin is average. The door trim is a bit meh. Several I've been in the metal/wood looking plastic on the handle doesn't fit seamlessly to the door surface. The hood over the instrument cluster is just flat hard plastic etc.

The list could go on.

I personally think that the MK6 interior is far superior in both quality and practicality.
Having said that, the 135i engine is fabulous, and combine that with the RWD and the superb chassis and handling, and it is an awesome car.

I'm definitely with you about the interior quality being superior on the Golf, even the X3 interior feels cheap and tacky.... I once asked a BMW dealer if this was the current model X3, and he said yes. So i proceeded to ask if there was another du and he said no and asked why. I told him the interior in this was cheap and nasty and he took great offence to it.

He asked me to explain why, so I started showing him several aspects. The glove box seems cheaper than a VE commodore, and I hurt myself try to adjust the centre arm rest and several other things.

HOWEVER, you stated the BMW glove box as being to small to fit a street directory in, well the golfs is damn tiny also as far as I'm concerned.

I guess the driving of the car overshadowed those little faults in the interior. As far as i'm concern the seats are amazing, there are some faults like the cup holder you mentioned, but those are minor issues that most people can live with, as for the glove box... the golf one can't even fit the instruction manual in properly (have to shove it, twist it to get it in), i have sat nav, so never noticed that either... i don't know about the ones you've been in, but my one is fine, not great but better than the golf, as i have both.

I think you perception and expectation of the interior is too high? maybe because you've been in the 3 series and it was heaps better. The 135i is only 80-90k, which comes close to 335i and M3, but at half the price... so you have to take that into consideration.

But once you start driving the car, any of those minor faults go away.

But in no shape or form is the golf's interior better than the bmw's interior.

Don't want a bmw vs vw war or anything, just my opinion from owning both, and yes mine is a mk5, mk6 is "alot better". The interior in the golf is "good" in golf and vw standards.
