pollen air filters - ac, are they all the same ?

I just replaced the pollen air filter in the GTI, and the replacement filter, is different to the one I pulled out.

the one I removed - the filter material is a grey coloured material, with a additional rubber seal along the bottom edge,

the new one is a white material, different texture and no rubber seal.

the part numbers are different and the old was made in Germany and the new is made in Czechoslovakia, I bought the part from a VW dealer and it came in a audi/vw box. cost was $21 odd.

just wondering if I was given the right part?

The one you removed was the active carbon impregnated one and will filtrate exhaust fumes. White one is paper only, good for dust only.

Yes, the white filter will not filter out odours. The grey filter with activated charcoal is more expensive however.

HSY Imports is where I bought mine and it was less than $40 for Golf5. Paper only was $10 cheaper.
