That's a fault. Have it replaced!
I have only been in the VW owners' club a couple of months and still trying to get used to all the things which I hate (ummm... sorry... are different). It is a good thing that there is a lot more to like so we'll get there.
One thing which I am struggling with and I have never, ever experienced before with any other vehicle I have owned is that whenever I go to get fuel and undo the filler cap, the rubber sealing ring has come off the actual cap and is stuck to the mouth of the filler pipe inlet.... weid!
I have to peel this thing off the filler inlet pipe every time I get fuel and re-fit it to the cap. In only takes about 10 seconds but but if I don't then the sealing ring is likely to fall-off. Has anyone else had this issue?

YES - now that you mention it. Couple of fills ago I noticed what looked like a large O ring on the filler nozzle when I finished fueling. Thought to myself that does not look like part of the bowser and it has probably come off a car. Found it fitted perfectly on the end of my filler cap so placed it there. Haven't thought much of it since then - Hopefully it is still there.

No, mine's fine.
Sounds like it could be a mk6 fault.
Anyone know if they have changed the design over from the mk5.
Just checked. Seal was missing from my beneath my cap. Sure enough - Just like Grover said - it was stuck to and hanging by a thread from the filler neck.
