I'd put a few quid on it being in the level sensor in the sump.

Hi,
Does anyone know where the oil temp sensor is on our Mk6 is? (GTi specifically but I'd assume they'd be all in the same spot)
I assume the probe would be in the sump itself, but you know what assume me. Makes an ASS out of U and ME
Cheers

Its in the sump
Cheers mate,
So subsequent to that. If my oil (according to the sensor) is reading 110 as an example. The sump itself would be how many degrees off?
I've an infra -red temp gun that is fairly high end (3M product) so if the oil is 110 thermal dynamics the sump would be similar if not the same? Anyone have experience in that field?
Why am I asking this? My oil temps are high. Is th sensor out or am I really getting that car all hot and bothered.
The oil temp sensor is also the oil level sensor (does both).
Not sure why your car seems to run hotter - could simply be slight variance from one car to another, but more likely to be different conditions we are driving in. Newcastle has pretty free flowing traffic (very rarely am i stationary for more than a few mins - most of the time its at a set of traffic lights) and im generally cruising along at 50, 60 or higher kph.
As a side note, my GTI does run about 5-7 degrees hotter (oil temp) than my old Golf R in the exact same circumstances.
Pretty certain you can log oil temp via VCDS too, might be a good idea to see if VCDS reports the same oil temp as your dash shows.

Car is still at dealers so I can't be sure is VCDS oil temp is different to the temp reported by the car. I do half remember checking that and it was same again I can't be 100%.
I do have a loaner Polo so I'm going to drive that around and see what the car says the oil is and what the pan temp is. Then do the same to my Golf when I get it back
My GTI MK6 runs same temp, not sure if thats normal for gti? I will have a look once get back from dealer

On the track I've had them at 103 which is normal but the ambient temperature was low
I would think this would contribute to a higher reading on a 30+ day.
Some examples
ambient 2 degrees driving to Melbourne oil 105
Ambient 30 degrees driving Bathrust to lithgow 118 degrees
ambient 19 degrees - a bit of fun 125 degrees.
I'd expect 120s on a track where you're up around 6500rpm - not 125 on 10km back road that was all 3rd / 4th gear relying on the torque between 3500-5500rpm
