My dealer has very kindly offered to lend me a GTI manual for a week or so. I know what I'll be reading next week.

Agreed. If the manual was available online, I'd have read it cover to cover three times over by now! I'd even pay (a sensible amount) to get a copy.

Go to your spare parts department and order the manuals. They're pretty cheap, the RNS 510 manual is under $20.

Everything you need to know you can learn by reading the volkswagen forums, the manual will fill in specifics and any areas you've missed when you pick up the car.

Outer rear headrests are removable, centre rear is not.

I have a mk6 GTI and have all my rear headrests removed - including centre. The trick with them is to find the small screwdriver slot, push it in and then lift the headrests out.

For the middle headrest you have to approach from the boot. As you face the centre headrest the slot is on the right headrest pillar round black bracket, on the centre edge. You can get to it with a screwdriver from under the headrest this way.

you would think they would just put a button on both sides rather then having to use a screw driver. Slip and tear your leather...brilliant invention that one

97%* of VW owners don't read the owners manual when it's in their glovebox, what makes you think they would take the time to sit down at the computer to read it!

a SEARCHABLE online pdf manual would be fabulous. Not always that easy to find what you want in a paper manual. I think we have all become a little lazy with the introduction of electronic media. I have a 380 page PDF Massey Ferguson tractor manual and it is very quick to find what you want with a few smart keywords in the search box.

Same goes for searching legal cases and industrial awards. So much quicker and effective if it's electronic.

National Library of Australia has just digitised many newspapers from 1803-1954 which means millions of pages electronically searchable.

Now there is a thought. A searchable manual on the hard drive in the RNS510 or on and SDHC card to use in your computer just in case your VW has a rare electrical fault preventing you from using the RNS510. Save the trees with a brief introductory few pages in the glovebox manual and the rest on disk.

Might mean we need a new acronym instead of RTFM though of this comes into being.

Although we're heading off-topic, I'd really love to see more manufacturers move to electronic manuals as well.

It would also allow more frequent updates of the manuals, which could align better to in-country specifications, and also "firmware levels".

Also ties in with the other idea that soon cars will have, if not as standard, the ability to connect to a simple wifi receiver to allow them to connect to your home network, and download firmware & software updates, new maps for the sat nav, updated manuals to the central screen, and any other modifications that would help. Plus it would mean you'd no longer need to visit the dealers as much except for servicing - which is nice.

I think you will find that the screws are a result of the ADRs which require the headrests to be secured to the seat. I had a engineer that required me to put screws into the headrests of my import so he could pass it (the only thing he found).

no screwdribver required on mine. Just raise nthe headrest by pushing the clip. On th eopposite "stalk" you need to remove the little plastic cover (just spin and pull) tgo expose the clip on that side..
