The Official Mk6 Golf DSG Clutch / Shudder / Squeal Issues Thread

"THE" man at CRICKS SUNSHINE COAST has booked in my 09 118tsi to replace the S/C clutch pack with the unit that solves (according to the factory) the "chirping" issue. Mine started "chirping at approx 27000kms, now at 32000kms. Not one other issue at all. According to "THE" man at my dealership the fix has only just become available from the factory. Being done 22/2. Will post result.

Klosters in Newcastle are still saying that there is no fix for the golf chirp, "you just have to accept it as part of owning a golf".

Interesting to note that at least 3 people have posted stating that their dealer has suggested that the revised pump / clutch is a permanent fix.
However, other dealers claim its only a temporary fix with the same unit going back in the car. WTF?
Has VAG any idea what's going on? I think not.

Wow... I have not logged in for and it is a surprise to see this thread is still going... Although quite disheartening from a quality standpoint.

I still have mild shudder when the car takes up 2nd gear. I have complained to vw head office after the first dealer refused to acknowledge the problem was still there. So i took the car in for a second opinion at another dealership and they also said it was "within tolerance".

The problem is not getting worse, but needless to say i will be getting the extended warranty.

I did notice how creamy smooth a new jetta with 7 DSG was and i pointed that out to the first dealer. Even though they were the ones who know my car history and replaced the clutch pack, they didnt buy the story.

I did drive a new comfortline 118tsi with sports and noticed it did have juddering in 2nd from a crawl. That did surprise me, so maybe it is within spec? Whilst it may be within spec, it certainly isnt how my car was in the first 22,000 km of its life.

Anyway, well done to those who have had the problem fully resolved by the new clutch pack. I can only say to those who have the problem, get it seen to sooner than later. Perhaps the length of time to acknowledgement and resolution was a factor in my issue not getting fully resolved.

I only hope this thread can make the ownership experience a little less frustrating than it is for me. I have decided no APR for me

I've been watching this and the 118TSI engine problem thread for a while, I can see why VW got plaster in the US about reliability

Having said that it seems that the 118TSI is the model with most of the issues (although TDI people seem to have had a few DSG issues). Personally I have had no problems with my Golf but it is less complex model and complexity may ultimately be where the issue lies for this generation of Golfs...

Interesting to note that posters seem to bag the 118TSi, but after 3 years I've never had a problem with mine. Is it the way different people treat their cars / whatever fuel they put in them or just their driving style? I'll back my car to the hilt against other makes for refinement and lack of issues.

The clutch is controlled by the mechatronic unit so I don't believe you can put it down to driver fault. Also the fact that VW are replacing clutch packs under warranty suggests that it is indeed a manufacturing fault since warranty doesn't cover damages that are caused by the user.

Took ours back to the dealer yesterday. The DSG has been like brand new since the clutch pack fitment. Unfortunately travelling to work on Friday & the missus reported that while taking off from either a standing start or slow speed there was absolutely no throttle response. She had the pedal to the floor and the engine did not rev. She managed to get it to work, and on the return run home there was no sign of the problem. It sounds like maybe an electrical connection / throttle pedal potentiometer issue that the engine ECU reset once the ignition was switched off. No warning lights came up and as I had my VCDS cable at work I couldn't scan it.

It was OK on the drive down to the dealers yesterday too. Hopefully they can see a fault with their software. Intermittent problems really are the worst to diagnose.

I feel for you. I am in the same boat ( or rather same car! ). My thinking in my case is possibly go to the GTI rather than hang around onto the current car until the Golf 7. Reasoning is that the GTI is based in a more mature technology that would have fewer issues than the 118tsi. The other consideration are teething issues from being an early adopter again with Golf 7.

Extended warranty is around another $1400. Maybe bail sooner.

You have obviously done lots for your car and it would be a pity to sell so soon.

I feel for people that have problems with their TSI. Fortunately I haven't had any, so consider myself lucky. However I will be getting the extended warranty in 6 months when the 3 years warranty runs out. Still the best car I've ever owned.

My dsg died this morning. Started it up, put it into R and nothing. D nothing. CEL light on and gear display flashing! Checked fuses, 30a #2 fuse blown. Call roadside assist, they send nrma and he replaces the blown fuse only for it to blow straight away. It's now about to get a tow to service!

Best but is, they don't have a courtesy car available until thursday!!!
