    Can't wait
I was reliably informed that yes you can change the spec of your order BUT it may result in the build being delayed!

I chose to keep my R as per the original order .... Unfortiunately my wait is another 116 days!! Yes I'm counting....

You'll find the answer in the How to track the car you have ordered? thread (very first post).

I thought I would provide some information to help understand why there is so much discrepancy between what some people say about the time it takes to get their cars when they've been ordered against the factory.
Some dealers have advance orders in the system that they place based on a spec that they determine about what they think they can sell. For example in March they might order a White GTI 5 Door with DSG and an RVC Camera. They sometimes place multiple orders. If a customer comes in and signs up an order for a spec car that the dealer either doesn't have in the system already or can't "stock swap" with another dealer, then they can change the spec of the car they have ordered on the factory as long as the VW Manufacturing plant has not yet scheduled the build of the vehicle. In other words, orders get aggregated in the system and sit there waiting their turn before they get to build scheduling point. Once they are given a build schedule, then the vehicles get locked in at that time and cannot be changed. If the dealer gets in before that time, they can change the spec to meet your requirements - eg change colour, add options etc without losing their slot in the Queue.

The reason why wait time can vary between dealers can be influenced by the amount of cars that the dealer has on order to change spec on. If you are unlucky enough to do the deal with a dealer who doesn't have anything in advance order, then your spec gets put on the end of the Queue. Ofcourse once a customers name gets assigned to a vehicle that's "in the queue", there is the potential for these orders to get priority over unallocated orders in the system but if you've lucked up a dealer who has plenty on order and you get to the "top of the tree", then you can get the jump on people ordering from the dealer who doesn't have any (or few) orders in.

This all leads to uncertainty in wait times because a dealer isn't usually going to share with the customer details about their back end ordering status.

Everything is correct, i just wanted to add one more thing.

Changing of spec may affect position in the queue, which would mean original delivery date may push back to the end of the queue. There is no %100 assurance that changed spec car will stay in the same slot.
